Bodegas Ostatu is a family winery located in the heart of the Rioja Alavesa region. The Saenz de Samaniego family farm old vineyards composed of chalk and clay, and these well drained, infertile soils give their wines a very distinctive character.
Today, the family is helped by Hubert de Bouard de Laforest of the famed Bordeaux estate Chateau Angelus. Ever since Hubert took the consulting job here, Ostatu’s wines have improved dramatically. By taking advantage of the estate’s old vines and the vineyard’s unique orientation, he has helped the family gain recognition for their wines on the world stage.
Their white wine is made up of 90% Viura and 10% Malvasia from vineyards in the 60 to 70 year age range. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel to preserve this old vine purity and goodness, and the resulting wine is nothing less than astounding.
The nose smells beautifully of pear, white peach, lemon, apple, spice and mineral. The palate is steely, dry, and fresh, but medium to full bodied with assertive flavors of orchard and citrus fruits along with notions of green herbs and mineral.
