Monte Oton Garnacha, one of the great red wine values in the world.

2013 Bodegas Borsao Monte Oton

SOLD OUT! When searching for extreme wine values, look no further than Spain and especially the Campo de Borja region. Located just south of Rioja and Navarra in North-Central Spain, this area is home to some of the country’s and the world’s greatest red wine values, and the grape responsible for all of these great values is Garnacha.

Of all of the producers of the region, Bodegas Borsao might “do” Garnacha the best. One of the pioneering producers of the region, they are the unofficial emperors of “The Empire of Garnacha.” The 2013 Bodegas Borsao Monte Oton is undoubtedly one of the best red wine values in the world.

2013 Bodegas Borsao Monte Oton

Ripe, plump, pleasure bent and value priced!

SOLD OUT

The Campo de Borja region is part of the larger Aragon region, and most experts agree that this is where the Garnacha grape originated. Today, Garnacha accounts for nearly 60% of the D.O.’s vineyard plantings, and Bodegas Borsao represents almost 35% of the total D.O. vineyard surface. This is not a small family affair; instead, it is a cooperative composed of 620 different small growers all working towards a common goal — producing the best Garnacha-based wines of the region. They are succeeding!

Monte Oton is Borsao’s entry level Garnacha, and it is 100% Garnacha from 15 to 25 year old vineyards situated high on the windswept slopes of the extinct volcano, Moncayo. This sun drenched, arid location is ideal for harvesting, perfectly matured, fully ripened Garnacha grapes. Once harvested, the wine is fermented in stainless steel to preserve all the natural aromas of the grape. Surprisingly full bodied and packed with aromas and flavors of kirsch, blueberry, peppery spice, and earth. Styled like a really good Cotes du Rhone, but selling for a lot less, this one is going to disappear quickly.

We poured this one this past Saturday, and there’s not much left of the 10 cases we picked up from our distributor. Bad news, they’re out now! Good news, we still have six cases to sell, and this is the perfect one to have around the house for all occasions, big and small.
