I’ll keep this really simple. I drank a bottle of this wine last night, and I’m convinced that you won’t find a better Rioja value on the market.
Combining some of the classic spice and earth characteristics of traditionally styled Rioja with the riper fruit of more modern styled Rioja, it’s the perfect balance. Rated 91 points by Wine Spectator and ranked #58 on their Top 100 Wines of 2015, the 2012 Finca San Martin Rioja Crianza is our new Wine of the Weeks.

Founded in 1986, Torre de Ona got off to a rough start. Simply put, their early releases just weren’t very inspiring. This all changed in 1995 when Rioja’s famed La Rioja Alta purchased the estate and took over all facets of viticulture and winemaking. Since then, the wines have improved dramatically, and their current releases are some of the best wines the winery has released to date.
The 2012 Finca San Martin Rioja Crianza is 100% Tempranillo that sees 16 months aging in French oak and 12 months aging in bottle before release. The wine pours a brilliant dark ruby color and breathes of sweet spices, high quality aged balsamic vinegar, and ripe red and black fruits. There is complexity and depth on the nose that I rarely detect in Riojas in this price range.
On the palate, the wine is rich with fine tannins, perfectly ripened fruit, vanilla and Indian spices. Wine Spectator says this “red is focused and polished, delivering harmonious flavors of black cherry, olive, smoke and mineral. The tannins are well-integrated, the acidity fresh. A bit reserved, but has depth. Drink now through 2022.”
Drink now through 2022? Yep, this one has some cellar potential, but it’s also delicious right now! Trust me, if you are a fan of Rioja or Spanish wine in general, this is one to purchase by the case.
