Erbaluce is an indigenous Piemonte grape grown near the city of Caluso, about 20 miles northeast of Torino. The name of the grape combines two Italian words: erba, meaning “herb” and luce, meaning “light”, a reference to the wine’s gorgeous color when it is young and fresh.
The undisputed leading producer of Erbaluce is the Orsolani family who have been responsible for the resurgence of the grape and its spread to parts outside of its homeland. They take their craft very serisously, producing still Erbaluce, sparkling Erbaluce, dry Erbaluce and sweet Erbaluce. More importantly, their wines win more awards than any other producer in the region.
So what’s this stuff like? The nose immediately takes you in for a deeper examination — right up front, there’s lemon, pear, golden apple, rosemary, sage and thyme. With a little time, a touch of mineral and white peach sneaks out. The bouquet continues onto the palate with really fresh notes of exotic citrus and pear, herbs, gentle spice and mineral. All of this his held together by an almost Riesling-like acidity that gets your mouth watering, cleans your palate, and brings you back for sip after sip.
I originally bought this wine for warm weather and "summer selling," but after having a bottle recently, I don’t think we should limit it to just the warmer months. For fans of crisp, un-oaked white wines a la Sauvignon Blanc, dry Riesling, Chenin Blanc, even Pinot Grigio, you’ve got to try this. It makes for a great, unpretentious sipping wine, and it loves food. From fresh fish and seafood to poultry to roasted root veggies, this one is going to brighten up your meal and your day.
