Attems Sauvignon Blanc

2019 Attems Sauvignon Blanc

SOLD OUT! Though it hails from Italy’s Friuli region, the 2019 Attems Sauvignon Blanc reminds this taster of Sancerre. And no, I’m not over-hyping this one. To my palate, this is one of the finest Sauvignon Blanc values in the world.

There’s an elegance, restraint, and mineral character present in this wine that I typically only encounter in top Loire Valley Sauvignon Blancs. And at less than $15, I think you’ll taste the value here.

SOLD OUT

I was completely blown away when I tasted this with my sales rep last week. Although Friuli enjoys a stellar reputation for white wine production, this one has obviously remained a hidden treasure. With the fruit ripeness of Sancerre, an intense and complex bouquet, and lush weight and texture, Attems shows how the value of quality-driven, artisanal producers can be extraordinary.

Attems is one of Friuli’s most historic producers, with a winemaking heritage dating back nearly a millennium. Count Douglas Attems, who led his family’s estate for the second half of the 20th Century, was one of the leading forces in helping Friuli attain its DOC status. In 2000, he sold the estate to Marchese Vittorio Frescobaldi, and the quality of the estate’s wines went even higher.

Sandy rocky soils and warm days and cool nights are the key features of Attems’ estate vineyards. The well-drained, mineral-rich soils of Friuli result in concentrated and pure Sauvignon Blanc flavors. And optimum ripening conditions are a direct result of the warm and sunny days and cool nights. And when you combine this with hand harvesting and sorting and a state of the art winery, it should come as no surprise that a great bottle of wine is produced.

So what’s it taste like? Like I said before, in a blind tasting, I’d be guessing Loire Valley Sauvignon Blanc all the way. It flows with gorgeous notes of green pear, green fig, white peach, green herb, and mineral. And though fresh and zesty, there’s ample weight and texture here. I said it once and I’ll say it again: this is one of the finest Sauvignon Blanc values I’ve tasted in a long time.

I’d highly recommend you get at least a 6-pack of this, especially if Sauvignon Blanc is your favorite. Enjoy it with friends, with foods, and be sure to tell everyone where you got it. Cheers folks!
