The 2018 Bodegas Sierra Salinas Mo Monastrell is a definite candidate for top red wine value in the world. Rated 90 points by both Jeb Dunnuck and James Suckling, this offers a ton of quality to price ratio. From certified organic vineyards previously owned by the Castano family of Yecla, Spain, this must be tasted to be believed.
When it comes to world-class Spanish wines, whether value-priced or expensive, importer Jorge Ordonez knows what he’s doing. And Jorge began representing the Bodegas Sierra Salinas wines in the US in 2018. We’re glad he did and when you taste this wine, you’ll be glad too.

Here’s a wine where the price does not match the quality inside the bottle. Family owned and operated, old vines, certified organic, dry farmed, and delicious. How the hell do you get that much wine for the price we’re offering it? I attribute some of that to my skills at finding you the best wine for your dollar, but honestly it’s more about the importer and the region. Jorge Ordonez has been bringing American wine lovers values like this for over 20 years now. But this might be his greatest “value find” of all time.
Composed entirely of Monastrell (aka Mourvedre) from vineyards planted between 1970 and 1995, the winery chooses not to irrigate. This is kind of a big deal. Most producers choose to irrigate their vineyards in this arid climate. But Bodegas Sierra Salinas chooses dry farming, which forces the root structures to grow deep and produces bunches with deep, rich, and concentrated flavors. And with such healthy fruit, they also choose to ferment this one entirely in stainless steel.
The resulting wine possesses qualities and attributes typically found in wines that cost 2 to 3 times the price. And I’m not the only one impressed with this one. Jeb Dunnuck love it too, calling it “another smoking value from this importer.” He went on to provide his tasting notes, which match mine. “Blueberries, violets, white pepper, and graphite notes all emerge from the 2018 Mo, which is 100% Monastrell, from old vines and high elevation vineyards, brought up all in stainless steel.” James Suckling liked it too, calling it “bright and fruity” and “quite enjoyable.”
At $10.99/bottle, this is a ridiculous value — at $7.99/bottle on your solid case, you’ll be thanking me for days. Enjoy this hearty red with burgers, pizza, lasagna, or chili as we head into the cooler temperatures of autumn. Or skip the food, and sip on this one with your wine loving friends. They’ll think you spent at least 15 bucks! I suspect sales on this will be swift. Act fast or forever hold your peace.
