1. 2017 Domaine de la Pepiere Muscadet Sevre et Maine “La Pepie” (Loire Valley) – Marc Ollivier makes some of the best Muscadet on the planet. He works with old vines, farms with organic and sustainable measures in place, hand harvests, ferments with native yeasts…….you get the point, this is truly artisan wine. Bone-dry, super crisp, and laced with salty mineral notes, it is one of the all-time great seafood wines.
2. 2017 Domaine Duffour Cotes de Gascogne (Gascogne) – Vigneron Michel Duffour resides in the small town of Lagraulet-du-Gers, in Southwestern France, where he makes deliciously crisp white wines (like this one) along with Armagnac. His white wine is a blend of primarily Colombard, with Ugni Blanc and Gros Manseng in supporting roles. It is a top-flight Gascogne white that will remind some of New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc with its crisp and aromatic style.
3. 2017 Domaine Ricard Touraine “Le Petiot” (Loire Valley) – Vincent Ricard runs one of the most esteemed cellars in the whole of Touraine. His vines are old, he farms organically, and his wines drink well above their respective price points. His entry-level white is 100% Sauvignon Blanc fermented in tank, then aged on lees for a bit. Vincent ages about 20% of the juice in well-seasoned, old barrels to add texture. The resulting wine is reminiscent of Sancerre, with lovely notes of lemon, grapefruit, green herbs and mineral.
4. 2017 Chateau d’Oupia Les Heretiques (Languedoc/Roussillon) – Chateau d’Oupia represents the qualitative heights that can be reached in France’s Languedoc zone. Based in Minervois, their Les Heretiques bottling is 100% old vine Carignan, with 50% fermented in a traditional manner and 50% made by carbonic maceration (a la Beaujolais). A candidate for “best bistro wine” of all time, it is fresh and pure with notes of dark fruits and pepper.

6. 2016 La Grange de Piaugier Cotes du Rhone (Rhone Valley) – Year in and year out, this is one of my go-to “house reds.” Domaine de Piaugier is based in the village of Sablet, which stands proudly at the feet of the jagged Dentelles de Montmirail in the Vaucluse department of the Southern Rhône. The estate’s La Grange bottling is a whole-cluster, Rhone field blend, with Grenache “driving the bus,” then Syrah, Mourvèdre, Cinsault and Carignan in supporting roles. Beautifully textured, aromatic, and interesting, this is a lovely expression of traditional Cotes du Rhone.
