The Wines
1. Toucas Vinho Verde (Portugal) – Vinho Verde is Portugal’s most exported wine, and it is one of the quintessential summer wines. With its lower alcohol content, dry and crisp flavors, and light sparkle, it makes for a perfect companion while sitting poolside or at the beach. This one is a cut above most of the other Vinho Verdes in the market — beautiful apple, pear, lime, and floral notes infuse this uber-refreshing, thirst quenching chugger.
2. 2013 La Chablisienne Saint-Bris Sauvignon Blanc (Burgundy, France) – La Chablisienne is one of the largest landholders in Chablis, and they also make this unique Sauvignon Blanc from vineyards just south of AOC. It is the only Sauvignon Blanc AOC in Burgundy, and the wine comes off tasting very much like one from the Loire Valley. Nervy, bone dry, crisp, and mineralic, it is somewhat reminiscent of Sancerre at a fraction of the price.
3. 2012 Nadia Cabernet Sauvignon “Santa Barbara Highlands” (Santa Barbara County, California) – There’s more and more “Cab action” going on in Santa Barbara County today than ever. It’s warm, sunny days and cool nights are perfect for the even and slow ripening of Cabernet Sauvignon, and this wine is a great introduction. Wine Enthusiast said: “Blueberries and purple fruits get distinct seasoning from maple syrup, licorice, crushed Italian herbs and minerality in this wine from the underappreciated Cuyama Valley. The palate is quite wound up, with blueberry, black lava rocks and unrelenting herb flavors just poking out. This will unwind very nicely, so drink 2018–2028.” 92 points – Wine Enthusiast
