2016 J. Dusi Model M Red Blend

J. Dusi Model M Red Blend Is Back

After a long absence from the the store the J. Dusi Model M Re Blend is back and the 2017 vintage is just as good as the 2016 was. Team Dusi is one of Paso Robles’ most famous farming families and they’ve sold their grapes to Turley and Ridge for years.

And if you know Turley, you know one of their most iconic Red Zins comes from the old Dusi Vineyard. No disrespect to Turley. We stock and love their wines too but none of them exactly classifies as a great value like this one.

Like your reds big, plush and jammy? If you answered yes, you will flip out when you taste this plush, soft and decadent blend of Zinfandel, Petite Sirah and Syrah. There’s no denying this is just pure pleasure wine. It’s not meant for aging and it’s not going to send you into a deep state of sensory meditation but it is going to make you very happy. Full bodied, fruit forward and ripe with fine tannin and mild acidity, this is a wine I would easily score at 89-92 points.

Despite being a bigger, darker red, it is seamless and smooth and perfect for summer cookouts. Coating the glass with an almost liqueur like viscosity, this one offers up pleasure-bent aromas and flavors of dark cherry and blueberry preserves, warm plum, baking spices and mellow herbal nuances. It’s definitely dry but it’s far from austere, bitter or “bite-y.”

The Dusi family’s heritage dates back to the early 1920’s, when this Italian family first started growing grapes in California’s Central Coast. For years, the family simply farmed grapes and sold them to the likes of Turley and a host of others — they didn’t make their own wines until recently. That all changed when Janell Dusi took over the estate a few years ago. She’s the third generation of the family to farm the vineyards, but she is the first to craft wines from the estate. If you ask me, she’s doing a great job! But don’t think she just sits around waiting for the grapes to ripen. Far from it — she’s involved in every aspect of the winemaking process, from vineyard to bottle. During the growing season, you’ll find her working the vineyards and driving the family’s old Model M Tractor, for which this wine is named.

And like that dependable old tractor, this blend of Zinfandel, Petite Sirah and Syrah is enjoyable, unassuming, and reliable for a long haul. Enjoy this pleasure-bent red with barbecue, chili, or burgers. Or skip the food and just drink it!
