The Wines
1. 2013 Nals Margreid Pinot Grigio: From the higher altitude vineyards of Italy’s Alto-Adige region, this is one of the best Pinot Grigios we’ve ever stocked for less than $15. It comes from vineyards that were planted back in the 1940’s, and there’s a serious presence to the wine. Fuller bodied, creamier, riper and richer than most Pinot Grigios at this price point, this one offers up round notes of ripe apple, pear, tangerine, nectarine and spice. You won’t believe how good this is for the price.
2. 2013 Coto de Hayas Garnacha/Syrah: This one comes from the Campo de Borja in North-Central Spain, a hotbed of Garnacha activity.
It recently scored 89 points with The Wine Enthusiast and was their #14 wine on their Top 100 Wine Values of 2014 list. Ripe, rich, balanced and spicy, this one displays smoke accented notes of cherry, raspberry, plum and milk chocolate. For less than $10 a bottle, you’d be hard pressed to find a better wine.
3. 2012 Domaine Amido Cotes du Rhone Villages “Signargues”: Along with the Cercius Cotes du Rhone, this is one of the best selling red wines in the history of the store. 70% Grenache and 30% Sryah from older vines planted in rocky, well drained soils, this is a big, plush, mouthfilling Cotes du Rhone. Baked raspberry, blueberry, kirsch, smoked meat and white pepper all arise out of the glass and continue onto the palate. Again, at under $15 a bottle, this is a no brainer.
