There’s something magical about drinking wine outside on sunny spring days. It just feels good! And it feels even better when you’re drinking the right wine(s), and this tasting will showcase some of our favorite spring and summer wines. Your palate will be overwhelmed with joy when you taste a couple of fresh whites, a perennial favorite dry rosé, and a couple of stellar reds from Southern France. 1. 2018 Bodegas Luzon ‘Coleccion’ Blanco (Jumilla, Spain) – Talk about a white that over-delivers! This blend of equal parts Macabeo and Sauvignon Blanc literally smells like a sunny day. With crisp and refreshing notes of green apple, mixed citrus, green herb and white flowers, it’s a ton of wine for less than $10.
2. 2017 Soléna Cellars Pinot Gris (Willamette Valley, Oregon) – This one really grabbed me when I tasted it recently. It’s a rocking good version of Oregon Pinot Gris that shows lots of richness and opulence without being heavy. Wine Enthusiast writes: “This is a delicious wine that offers a riot of cut pear dusted with cinnamon. It’s further enlivened by appealing minerality, with the freshness of spring water over clean rock. The finish goes on indefinitely.” – 92 points
3. 2018 Barnard Griffin Rosé of Sangiovese (Columbia Valley, Washington) – Sunny spring days and dry rosé are made for each other, and it doesn’t get much better than this. Barnard Griffin’s dry pink wine has taken home more awards than any other produced in our country, and the new vintage is as good as ever. Dry, tangy and vibrant, this one provides maximum palate pleasure.
4. 2015 Le Cirque Cotes Catalanes Rouge (Roussillon, France) – Jeb Dunnuck called this one a “smoking value,” and I have to agree. A blend of old vine Grenache, Syrah and Carignan from the dry and sunny Roussillon region, this one is big and bold, with smoky, spicy black cherry, cassis and garrigue aromas and flavors.
5. Surprise Wine – It’s a 93 pointer that comes to you at a silly price. Wait until you taste it!
