Altosur Malbec 2019

The Top Malbec Value in the World: 2021 Finca Sophenia 'Altosur' Malbec

Let's get the new year off to a good start with a crazy-good deal on a 97 point-rated, value-priced Malbec. We started 2022 off with the 2019 version of this wine and sold 50 cases in 2 weeks. Guess what? The 2021 is even better and Decanter, Britain's top wine publication, gave Altosur's Malbec that 97 point score.

Finca Sophenia is one of the top estates in Mendoza, and their entry-level Malbec is in incredible form in the hot and dry 2021 vintage. Offering quite "grown-up" aromas and flavors at a great price, this is one of the top red wine values in the world. Check out the pricing, stock up, and save big!

97 points and less than $15? Yes, that is possible, and the 2021 Altosur Malbec is certainly worthy of great praise. Awarded Best in Show for Value Wines at Decanter's World Wine Awards earlier this year, they had some very good things to say about this wine. Decanter described the color as "saturatedly dense" and the aromas as "beefy" and "plummy". They went on say it possessed "admirable weight" and "notable energy" and "charm." Their review goes on and on, but I think you get the point, this is some serious juice at a seriously great price.

So often, Malbecs in this price range are nothing more than superficial fruit bombs that taste fake and processed. These are wines made with the "last pick" of fruit, and they are "adjusted" in the laboratory with various additives and short-cuts. These finished "Franken-Wines" taste grapey and gross, and we avoid the like the plague.

That's completely not the case here. Altosur is made with 100% estate-grown fruit, and it is aged in real French oak barrels. In addition, the estate is working towards organic certification, their vines are 30 to 40 years-old, and this Malbec consistently garners 92–93-point scores across many of the most trusted wine mags. All I can say is that the finished wine is complete, delicious, and it easily competes with Malbecs that cost 2 to 3 times the price.

We tried a bottle after work late last week, and we were all quite stunned by the overall style and poise of this wine. It opens with pure and delightful aromas of plum, blueberry, dark cherry, violet, and toasty oak. On the palate, it is forward and round, with soft tannins and gentle acidity. Dark, quite concentrated, and beautifully polished and harmonious, it's just a ton of wine for the money.

What more could you ask for in a wine at such a fair price? Take it to your next dinner party and blow your friends away. They'll think you spent $20+, I guarantee it.
