La Colline aux Fossiles Chardonnay 2019

Chardonnay Deal of the Year: 2019 La Colline aux Fossiles Chardonnay

There's a new Lafage-made Chardonnay in the house, and it's absolutely awesome. Rated 94 points by Jeb Dunnuck, this drinks like a $40+ California Chardonnay.

Produced from 30+ year old vines grown in gravelly, limestone-rich soils, you're not going to believe the price on this one. I'm going to call it "Novellum Reserve," as it comes from the same team that makes that one, but it's a bit more complex and complete.

When vigneron Jean-Marc Lafage and importer Eric Solomon team up on a project, TAKE NOTICE. This is their newest creation, and it's got to be one of the top Chardonnay values in the galaxy. Produced from Chardonnay grown in the gravelly, fossil-strewn soils of France's Roussillon region, this stuff must be tasted to be believed.

Jeb Dunnuck summed it up perfectly. "All Chardonnay brought up in used demi-muids, the 2019 La Colline Aux Fossiles sports a medium gold hue to go with terrific stone fruits, caramelized citrus, white flowers, and honeysuckle-like aroma and flavors as well as a beautiful sense of minerality that emerges with time in the glass. Medium to full-bodied and beautifully textured, with a layered mouthfeel and a great finish, it's another knockout Chardonnay from the team of Eric Solomon and Jean-Marc Lafage."

The quality and nuance of this Chardonnay is very hard to put into words. I've had Chardonnays from California, Oregon, and Burgundy that cost two to three times the price of this, but they don't even come close to the quality of this one. It is wonderfully polished, and it is also thought-provoking. What a wine!

Bravo to Eric and Jean-Marc for creating such a satisfying wine at such a satisfactory price. I, I guarantee this one is going to be sold out in record time. Enjoy it with everything from roast chicken and salmon to pork tenderloin and scallops. It also makes for a super-fine aperitif.
