Absurd Old Vine Zin Value: 2019 Marietta Cellars Roman Zinfandel

Absurd Old Vine Zin Value: 2019 Marietta Cellars Roman Zinfandel

If there is one grape that Marietta Cellars is known for, it's Red Zinfandel. Their 2019 Roman Zinfandel is a great entry point to to their mastery of the varietal, and it's also an insane value in high quality, estate-grown, organic Zin.

Rated 95 points by Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, this is a ton of wine for less than $25. The good news is we bought every bottle our distributor had in stock, the bad news is that only amounted to 72 bottles. Even more heartbreaking, due to the fires and smoke taint last year, Marietta will not release a 2020 Roman. Keep reading if you want, but if you love Old Vine Zin, use the link below to place your order before this one is gone.

I very much enjoyed my lunch with Marietta proprietor Scott Bilbro at Campo Fina in Healdsburg a few years back. We immediately connected. All I can say is Scott is about as "salt of the earth" as they come. As much fun as we were having, he only had 2 hours to spare, as he had to get back to tend to his vineyards. He said he had a "date with his tractor" that afternoon. We parted ways with a hug, and our meeting made me even more passionate about selling their wines.

Ok Josh, enough blathering. What's up with this wine? Named after cellar master Román Cisneros, who has worked at Marietta for over 32 years, this Estate Zinfandel is from Marietta's Angeli Estate vineyard in Alexander Valley as well as their McDowell Valley estate vineyard. The vines are old, like really old, like 100+ years old, and all of the farming is done organically. After the wine finishes fermentation, it is aged in older barrels for 10 months.

The resulting wine is a big glass of joy! Boasting a nose of floral infused raspberry, dark cherry, spice, and pepper, the palate is zesty, ripe, and packed with flavor. Full-bodied but plush and rounded, this is a wine that goes incredibly well with wood fired pizzas, red sauced Italian dishes, and barbecue.

The Wine Advocate gushed over this one. "The 2019 Román Zinfandel (blended with 4% Barbera and 2% Petite Sirah) has a medium ruby-purple color and gregarious scents of candied peach, wild berry preserves, orange peel and tar. The palate is deeply fruited but light on its feet with bright freshness and loads of perfume on the long finish." 95 points might be a tad generous, but this one is certainly delicious and it deserves at least a 93 point score.

With the 4th of July just around the corner, stock up on this All-American red for your holiday cookouts and gatherings. You won't regret it.
