Is Argiolas Vermentino 2018

95 Point Rated Argiolas Vermentino - Less Than $20

Is there a better white wine for the money than the 2018 Argiolas Vermentino? If you can find one, do tell.

From the estate’s oldest vines, the 2018 “Is Argiolas” Vermentino comes from grapes harvested later than their also-delicious Costamolino Vermentino. The resulting wine is fuller-bodied, riper, and more exotic. And it’s a great pick for a fall white.

I’ll start by saying this is the best Vermentino I’ve ever tried. And I’ve been doing this wine thing for 20 years now. There’s tremendous concentration and intensity of flavor, but there’s also bright acidity. And the wine tastes just as good as it smells. Crazy notes of white peach, apricot, tropical fruits, white flowers, almond, and honey are all at play in this world-class white.

And wine writer James Suckling, who can sometimes be a bit generous with his scores, nailed it on this one. “Here’s a very serious white indeed, trading in pronounced but bright apricots, peaches, mangoes, cloves, nutmeg and white pepper. Wonderful density and vitality to the full-bodied palate, where vibrant acidity crafts out a fine shape through fleshy tropical fruit. Long on the finish. Excellent value.”

If you know anything about Sardinian wine, you know that Argiolas is one of the best producers on the island. Founded in 1938 by Antono Argiolas, the estate is still family owned and operated. From the beginning, they’ve chosen quality over quantity, and they’ve dedicated themselves to producing archetypal wines from native varietals.

And this is certainly one of their best efforts of all time. Fermented in stainless steel to preserve freshness, the wine is aged for 6 to 8 months on the lees to add complexity and richness. And this richness calls for richer flavors on the table. Try it with seafood risotto, roasted and carmelized autumn root vegetables, or stash some for the classic Thanksgiving meal.

This is one of those wines that will appeal to a wide range of white wine lovers. But due to limited supply, I cannot guarantee a never-ending supply.
