SOLD OUT! The 2018 André Bonhomme Macon Villages Vieilles Vignes is one of the finest Macons I’ve come acrossed in 20+ year wine career.
Crafted by one of the top domaines in Southern Burgundy, this comes from 50+ year-old, certified organic, and carefully tended vineyards. It is packed with pure, intense, and mineralic Chardonnay flavor. I’ve run some other Macon white deals this year. For the record, this one is my favorite. When you taste it, you’ll understand why.
2018 Domaine André Bonhomme Macon Villages Vieilles Vignes

Domaine Andre Bonhomme is one of the top producers in the Maconnais, the southern-most part of Burgundy. Founded in 1956 by Monsieur Bonhomme, it was one of the first wineries in the region to bottle their own wines, opting not to sell their high-quality grapes to the local cooperatives. This was a major achievement and and a risky one at that. Many of André’s peers thought this would never work for him. They were wrong. Today, Bonhomme is considered an icon and his estate is now run by his daughter Jacqueline and her husband Eric Palthey.
As with all great wines, the greatness is in the details. And the Bonhomme’s pride and passion are abundantly present in this wine. They were one of the first estates in the Maconnais to attain organic certification. No chemical weed sprays and no insecticides…..they even limit the use of organic sprays so that the plant “learns” to defend itself. All grapes are picked by hand and carefully sorted in the cellars prior to fermentation. Post fermentation, the wine is aged for an 18 months on the fine lees, allowing it to pick up some of the spicy nuance that the spent yeast cells impart. That’s 2 to 3 times as long as most Macon producers age their wines.
After all of that labor, you’d hope this would taste great and I promise you it does. Offering up a pale yellow/greenish hue in the glass, it offers up lovely notes of mixed herbal oils on the nose along with fresh peach, apple, mint and chalky mineral. Rich and concentrated on the palate, it remains fresh and balanced by lemony acidity. Totally drinkable now, the family recommends stashing a few bottles and trying them 5 years from now. Yep, the zingy acidity and intense concentration these 50 year old vines yield allows this one to hold up much longer than almost any Macon Villages I can think of.
Bonhomme’s wines are usually a once a year allocation. But with many restaurants unable to take their allocations due to Covid restrictions, more became available to us. It’s bittersweet for sure, but I’m doing my part to help these small vignerons and distributors stay in business.
