SOLD OUT! The Domaine les Grands Bois Cairanne Cuvée Maximilien has always been a personal favorite of mine. I can say with certainty that the 2017 vintage is the best I’ve ever tasted. Rated 95 points by Jed Dunnuck, this could easily pass for a top Gigondas or Vacqueyras.

The blend here is 50% Grenache, 35% Mourvedre, and 15% Syrah from old, organically farmed vineyards just north of Gigondas and Rasteau. It could easily hold its own in a blind tasting of rich and robust Southern Rhones.

Jeb Dunnuck said this “might be the finest vintage to date for this cuvée.” I’ve had just about every vintage of this wine back to 2010, and I have to agree. Dunnuck went on to describe this one with glowing remarks. “Sporting a saturated purple color as well as blockbuster notes of ripe black fruits, new leather, crushed rocks, and violets, it hits the palate with full-bodied richness, integrated acidity, flawless balance, and a great, great finish. It will knock your socks off over the coming 5-7 years or so.”

As I said in the opening, I’ve long adored the wines of Domaine Les Grands Bois, one of the finest estates in the Southern Rhone. Marc Besnardeau is originally from Paris. For years, he worked as a sommelier at one of the top restaurants in Paris. But love struck, and Marc met Mireille Farjon, whose family owned pristine vineyards in the Southern Rhone. The two married, and Marc made the complete change from the city life to the life of a vigneron. The rest, as they say, is history.

His terrific credentials as a sommelier and his fine palate set him up to make great wines of his own. Marc was always a fan of wines made from old, low yielding vines; these were the wines with terrific concentration and great expression of terroir. And you can see, smell, and taste Marc’s personality in each of his wines. All of his wines are deeply colored, ripe, robust and while one can think of many flavors to describe them, the word delicious pretty much says it all.

I’m gonna’ wrap it up as there’s not much more to say here. This is a stellar wine at a great price, and I bought every bottle available to me. This is the kind of wine I like to sip slowly and follow it as it opens up to reveal new and enthralling layers of nuance. It’s also mighty nice served alongside any sort of lamb preparation. Once you buy it, it’s totally your call. Enjoy!
