2014 Barnard Griffin Sangiovese Rose

2014 Barnard Griffin Sangiovese Rose

We’re not sure how Rob Griffin manages to capture the Gold Medal every year at the San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition, but his 2014 Sangiovese Rose did it again this past February.

That’s the ninth time this wine has won Gold or better at this prestigious competition! There’s definitely something special about this wine, from it’s deeper hued color and creamy texture to its ripe strawberry and cherry pie flavors.

Let’s get one thing straight here, this wine is 100% DRY! Despite its deeper color (compared to other roses) and its ripely fruited nose and palate, we promise you that all of the natural sugar contained in the grapes at harvest have been converted into alcohol. There are still many who think that all pink wines must be sweet, a la Sutter Home White Zinfandel or Mateus — that’s rarely the case these days.

In fact, dry rose consumption in the United States is one of the largest wine growth categories of any in the country. Why is this? Because we’ve finally figured out what Europeans in Mediterranean climates have long known, that dry roses are the perfect warm weather, sunny day wines. With some of the red fruit character of a red wine, but the refreshing acidity of a white, they are easy to gulp with or without foods during the warmer months.

Talk about easy to gulp, the Sangiovese Rose from Barnard Griffin is downright dangerous in the sense that it goes down very easily and disappears quickly. The nose smells of freshly picked strawberry and cherry, watermelon, and flowers leading into a richer and more rounded palate of similar flavors. Perfect for just about any occasion that involves sunshine and warm weather, you’ll go crazy for this ideal summer wine.
