2016 J. Dusi Model M Red Blend

Baby Turley Red Blend - J. Dusi Model M

Turley lovers rejoice! The 2016 J. Dusi Model M Red Blend comes from one of Paso Robles’ most famed growers/producers, as the Dusi family have sold grapes to Turley for years.

If you know Turley, you know that one of their most iconic Zinfandels comes from the old Dusi Vineyard. No disrespect to Turley, as I love their wines, but they aren’t exactly great values. This one is though, and for fans of Paso Robles Zinfandel and/or Red Blends, you’re going to love this.

If you like your reds on the riper, jammier, rounder and softer side, this Zinfandel, Petite Sirah, Syrah blend is going to make you happy. It explodes out of the glass with aromas of dark cherry preserves, warm plum, baking spices and mellow herb. On the palate, it’s full-bodied and fruit-forward, with ripe and fine tannin and just enough acidity to keep you coming back for sip after sip. I’d score this one in the 89-92 point range — it’s not overly complex, but it is seriously enjoyable.

The Dusi family’s heritage dates back to the early 1920’s, when this Italian family first started growing grapes in California’s Central Coast. For years, the family simply farmed grapes and sold them to the likes of Turley and a host of others. They didn’t make their own wines until recently.

That all changed when Janell Dusi took over the estate a few years ago. She’s the third generation of the family to farm the vineyards, but she is the first to craft wines from the estate. If you ask me, she’s doing a great job! But don’t think she just sits around waiting for the grapes to ripen. Far from it — she’s involved in every aspect of the winemaking process, from vineyard to bottle. During the growing season, you’ll find her working the vineyards and driving the family’s old Model M Tractor, for which this wine is named.

And like that dependable old tractor, this blend of Zinfandel, Petite Sirah and Syrah is enjoyable, unassuming, and reliable for a long haul. Enjoy this pleasure-bent red with barbecue, chili, or burgers. Or skip the food and just drink it!
