2019 Scuderie Ducali Montepulciano d'Abruzzo

2019 Scuderie Ducali Montepulciano d'Abruzzo

The new vintage of the Scuderie Ducali Montepulciano is back, and it’s just as good and maybe even better than the previous vintage. Boasting a great combination of concentration and freshness, it’s incredibly versatile. I’m not just talking about with food. I’m talking about with people too. This is a red that will please lots of palates and work well with all sorts of classic Italian fare.

From a small, certified organic, family run estate, this is about as pure and honest as red wine gets. It’s like a “big glass of comfort,” and who can’t use that these days.

Talk about a wine that over-delivers in a huge way! This is that elusive red wine that is both inexpensive and delicious, hand crafted and affordable. It’s all of that and more folks. This 12 hectare, certified organic, family owned and operated winery is fairly new on the scene but I think it’s one that lots of folks will be talking about. It comes to us from our friend and importer Jay Murrie of Piedmont Wine Imports — if you’ve like other wines from that great portfolio, you’re gonna’ want to try this new one.

Believe me when I say this wine could easily hit the shelf at $20. It’s not one of those “fruity little numbers” that tastes like a cherry jolly rancher…….thank goodness. Far from it, this is a wine with some deep, complex and satisfying flavors. When I opened my first bottle and stuck my nose in the glass, I couldn’t believe the price on this one — thanks Jay! Far from being a “cheap pizza wine,” this is dark, full-bodied and moderately structured.

I’d highly recommend giving this 30 minutes in a glass or decanter before enjoying. And trust me, there are very few $10-ish red wines I can say that about. Right out of the gate, this one exudes classic Montepulciano aromas of plum, boysenberry, dark cherry and spice. On the palate, it’s concentrated but lively, with flavors of dark berries, warm cherry, oregano and thyme. A tad rustic but oh-so satisfying, this is a FANTASTIC Italian red to enjoy all spring and summer with all sorts of grilled dishes.

But don’t think it’s just for food. I think it’s a great and somewhat contemplative red for EVERYDAY drinking. Lynn and I enjoyed this one the other night with an Italian herb marinated pork tenderloin, roasted tomatoes and smashed white beans with garlic and lemon. If you buy a six pack, I’ll share the recipe!
