2019 Caparsa Rosso di Caparsa

2019 Caparsa Rosso di Caparsa

The 2019 Caparsa Rosso di Caparsa is a wine I can’t stop pondering. The essence of pure, traditional, and honest Sangiovese, it easily tops most Chianti Classicos, many of which cost a lot more.

“Paolo Cianferoni and his family craft deep, soulful wines loaded with character,” says Antonio Galloni of Vinous Media. That’s the understatement of the year. Taste this wine, and you’ll know what I’m talking about.

Caparsa is a certified organic, one-man estate making some of the most compelling wines in Chianti Classico. Paolo Cianferoni works with old vines, ferments with native yeasts, and bottles with minimal sulfur and/or fining and filtration. He could easily proclaim his wines as “natural,” but he prefers to refer to them as “good.” So do I!

While Caparsa’s Chiantis are the ones snagging all the great reviews, it is this wine that I think is his greatest creation. Don’t get me wrong, his Chianti Classico and his Caparsino Chianti Classico Riserva are both world-class wines — click here to check those out. But his Rosso offers the most quality to price ratio. It is a wine that truly “punches above its weight class.” Plus, a scant 400 cases were produced in the warm and ripe 2019 vintage.

Almost entirely Sangiovese from Paolo’s vineyards in Radda, the wine also contains small amounts of Trebbiano and Malvasia. It used to be the law that all Chiantis contain white grapes. That is no longer the case, but Paolo doesn’t care. This wine is his ode to “Old School Chianti,” and it is magnificent.

Boasting a deep ruby color, this is a wine that needs a few minutes of swirling to reveal it’s personality. Translated, be patient with this one to get the full effect. After about 5 minutes of aeration, this one really comes to life with gorgeous aromas of dark cherry, spiced plum, marjoram, and fennel. The palate is equally engaging with deep and round flavors of cherry, black cherry, mint, and smoky herb. Medium to full-bodied, plush, yet still zesty and fresh, this is one of the finest Italian red wine values I’ve encountered in a long time.

You will not find this wine in WNC at a better price….I guarantee it. Worthy of a half or solid case purchase, enjoy this stellar Sangiovese with meaty pizzas or red sauced classics. Just 20 cases up for grabs, and it’s first come – first served.
