The 2019 Bidoli Sauvignon Blanc is not only an extreme value, it’s a nearly perfect rendition of the grape. Possessing the zingy citrus of a New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc combined with the complex minerality of a French Sauvignon Blanc, it’s all delivered to you at a ridiculously low price.
The Friuli Grave zone in Northeastern Italy is the country’s top zone for Sauvignon Blanc. The gravelly soils of the region are identical to those found in Graves, Marlborough, and the Loire Valley. And this is a wine that possesses all of the best attributes of these more well-known Sauvignon Blanc “sweet spots.” The only difference is that this one comes to you at a much lower price.

We’ve run a number of great Sauvignon Blanc deals this year, but this one takes the prize for the top value. When Mike Tiano of the Haw River Wine Man poured this for me the other day, I didn’t expect much. I figured it would be a nice, simple little white, but I was frankly blown away when I stuck my nose in the glass.
I was greeted with aromas of carmelized citrus, pear, passion fruit, fresh herbs, and crushed rock. And the palate was even better! Concentrated, packed with classic Sauvignon Blanc flavor, and nicely rounded, it tasted like a White Bordeaux crossed with a New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc. And the finish was surprisingly long for a wine that retails for less than $15. Without a hitch, I ordered 14 cases, and I’m predicting those will sell out before the sale period ends.
Bidoli Vini is a third generation, family-run estate based in Friuli, in Northeastern Italy. Founded in 1924, the estate takes great advantage of the rocky soils this regions is known for. The rocks heat up during the day and cool off at night, providing optimal ripeness while maintaining crisp acidity. The unique character of these soils combined with the cooling effects of the Adriatic Sea and the shelter provided by the Dolomites and the Alps create ideal conditions for Sauvignon Blanc.
This is truly a phenomenal find, and I struggle to put into words how good this is for the money. You’ll just have to taste it for yourself. Enjoy this one with pretty much any sort of fresh dishes — salads, fish and seafood, goat cheese — whatever floats your boat. Or cool down with this one next to the pool or the ocean.
