Remember the Mark Herold Flux? A bunch of you loved that one, but unfortunately Mr. Herold has decided to stop making that one and focus entirely on Cabernet Sauvignon. No problem. I’ve found a perfect replacement, and I think I like this one even more. Villa Creek is super hot right now, and when you taste this one, I think you’ll understand why.
Cris and JoAnn Cherry moved to Paso Robles in 1996 to open a restaurant called Villa Creek. Inspired by the blossoming Paso wine scene, they decided to try their hands at winemaking. In 2003, the couple purchased 60 acres in West Paso Robles that bears remarkable resemblance to some of the great Southern Rhone estates. And it is mainly from this rocky and rugged terroir that their Cherry House red is produced.
The Cherry’s’ vision for this wine was for it to be their everyday house wine, but it’s so much more than that. Composed of 50% Grenache, 40% Carignan, and 10% Mourvedre, this one is ripe, bright, soft, and packed with pleasure. Wine Enthusiast nailed it with their review. “Soft aromas of polished red cherry, licorice, red flowers and wet gravel show on the nose of this new offering from proprietor Cris Cherry. The core of dark-red fruits are lifted by carnation and rose flavors, with firm tannins and a light licorice pop on the finish.” I couldn’t have said it better myself.
This is a wine I predict will become a new customer favorite. Perfect for sipping without food, it would taste great served alongside mildly spiced lamb dishes or pulled pork. Getting hungry and thirsty yet? I am! Cheers to happy drinking and eating in Asheville.
