I’ve stocked every vintage of this wine back to 2010, and I’ve loved it every year. Up until the current release, my favorite years were 2012 for it opulence, 2015 for its downright decadence, and 2016 for its power and purity. Vintage 2018 possesses all of these traits and more.

Will 2018 go down as the best Napa Cab vintage of the 21st century? Who knows, but everyone agrees it was a fantastic year that will certainly rank as one of the best. It was both abundant and very high quality, with perfect weather from veraison to harvest. Overall, it was a year where it was hard to make bad wine, and Kirk Venge makes great wine even in tough years like 2011 (Parker rated that vintage 92 points).

Before I get into my own tasting notes, I must to remind you that we never get enough of this wine. We sold 170 cases last year before it ran out — we could have easily sold a bunch more. And I attribute this supply/demand “issue” to the fact that this wine is always ROCK STAR QUALITY, but Kirk hasn’t upped production or price in ten years. In fact, the price came down a bit this year. Why? I don’t ask, I just order!

Value for money, that’s what this wine delivers. It’s made using the same care and “ingredients” as many wines that cost 3 to 4 times the price. Fruit comes from top sites in Calistoga, Oakville, and Rutherford, and the wine is aged for 18 months in high quality (and high dollar) French oak (65% new). The finished product slays so many Napa Cabs that cost so much more.

Okay, I’ve hyped the hell out of this thing — here are my personal tasting notes. Super deep, opaque in color and seriously concentrated on the nose. Big notes of creme de cassis, roasted coffee, warm blueberry, dark chocolate, and vanilla on the nose. Super concentrated on the palate, tastes like it smells, seamless in texture, and fine, perfectly ripe tannin. LONG FINISH! Like most vintages of this wine, this offers immediate gratification, but I suspect it will get even better. Drink now – 2030. AWESOME! BEST VINTAGE, BUY A BUNCH!!
