Terravignata Verdicchio di Matelica 2018

2018 Terravignata Verdicchio di Matelica

The Terravignata Verdicchio is one of the top white wine values I’ve tasted this year. Interestingly enough, we featured this wine last summer and it sold out in a matter of days.

Good news, it is back, and I negotiated an incredible price on my distributor’s remaining inventory. Far beyond being a great value, however, this is a prime example of how good Verdicchio can be. An ancient grape variety that produces some of Italy’s finest white wines, it ages well and it compliments fish and seafood dishes effortlessly.

Borgo Paglianetto is a producer to keep an eye on. Founded in just 2008, this tiny, family-run, certified organic estate is already making one of my favorite Verdicchios. This wonderful grape produces a white wine with a dry, crisp and refreshing character along with citrus and almond aromas and flavors.

Verdicchio grows best in the Marche region of central Italy, and there are two noted zones of production. Verdicchios produced near the hilltop town of Jesi, closer to the Adriatic sea, are noted for their light, crisp, and mineralic personalities. Wines from this zone are the ones you’ll most often encounter in the US. Slightly richer and fuller in flavor are the Verdicchios from Matelica, located further inland at the eastern base of the Apennine mountain range.

The 2018 Terravignata Verdicchio di Matelica is a deeply layered expression of the grape that balances its fuller body with electric acidity. Underneath the bright and ripe lemon, pear, and apple fruit is a core of complex and salty minerality. Tasted blind, I might have called this bone dry and lively white as a top-level Muscadet.

I can’t stress enough how rock-solid this wine is. If you are tried of drinking Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Grigio, and/or un-oaked Chardonnay, give this a try. I strongly advise you to stock up at the special 6 or 12 bottle price. This easily has another 3 to 4 years of great drinking ahead of it.
