Is this the best Ridge Three Valleys Red Blend of all time? After tasting this one yesterday and ordering every bottle my distributor had in stock, I say yes. Rated 93 points by Jeb Dunnuck and 92 points by Wine Spectator, this Zinfandel-based field blend is clicking on all cylinders this vintage. Get some before it gets gone!

In case you hadn’t heard, Vintage 2018 turned out nearly perfect in Sonoma County, with Wine Spectator calling it an “Ideal Year.” And living legend producers like Ridge produced some of their best wines ever.

When it comes to California Red Zinfandel, it’s pretty hard to beat Ridge. This is one of those producers that just doesn’t seem to fail, regardless of vintage conditions. But in the cooler, longer, and even-keeled 2018 vintage, they excelled. Keep in mind this is their entry-level wine, but there is nothing entry-level about it.

The 2018 Ridge Three Valleys is a blend of 72% Zinfandel, 14% Petite Sirah, 10% Carignane, 4% Mataro from ten different vineyards scattered throughout Sonoma. Unlike their single vineyard Zinfandels, which reflect the unique character of each site, Three Valleys speaks more of the overall Sonoma vintage as a whole. And the vintage character really comes through in this wine.

One of the things I love about Ridge is they continue to make their wines in a minimal interventionist style, aka natural. Fruit comes from sustainably and organically farmed vineyards and grapes are hand harvested. Fermentation occurs with native yeasts, and the wine is aged for 10 months in older American oak barrels. It is then bottled with minimal fining and filtration. Less is more is the overriding philosophy at Ridge.

I was struck with the wonderful purity and sublime texture of the 2018 version of this wine. And it doesn’t taste too shabby either. Dunnuck said it “has wonderful purity in its blue fruits, peppery herbs, violets, and sandalwood aromas and flavors.” He went on to say it was “seamless on the palate” and that this “balanced beauty can be drunk today or cellared for 10-15 years.” Not to be outdone, Wine Spectator had great things to say too. “Svelte and briary, with vibrant raspberry and black cherry flavors, accented by licorice, tarragon and white pepper notes. Drink now through 2028.”

I’ll have trouble keeping my hands off of this one for any length of time. I plan to pick up 12 Bones bbq, pop this, and call it a night. You should do the same. Or skip the food and just enjoy this elegant, seamless red blend with nothing more than a glass and a friend. Trust me, those 9 cases will be gone in no time.
