The 2017 Roland Minkowitsch Gruner Veltliner is a prime example of Austria’s most important and revered white wine. Dry, super fresh, and concentrated, this could easily compete with Gruners from the Wachau that would run you $25 or more!
For fans of crisp and zesty whites like Sauvignon Blanc, Chablis, and Chenin Blanc, you need to give this a try. What I love about the version from Minkowitsch is that is possesses the classic white pepper nuance typically only found in much more expensive Gruners.

Gruner Veltliner is recognized by wine insiders and top sommeliers as a very noble grape variety. And 15th generation grower/producer Martin Minkowitsch has produced one of the finest, under-$20 Gruner Veltliners I’ve ever tasted. Possessing intense and concentrated flavors of lime and white pepper along with notes of grapefruit, green herbs, and ginger, there’s a lot going on here.
And once the wine hits your palate, there’s a BIG burst of acidity that explodes in your mouth, intensifying and lengthening the flavors. And it’s this hallmark high acidity that makes Gruner Veltliner such an incredible food wine and a grape that none other than Wolfgang Puck counts as one of his favorites. I can guarantee you if Wolfgang tasted this one, he’d be jumping with joy!
Like all great wines, there’s a deeper story to that greatness. In this case, it’s the Minkowitsch family. Martin Minkowitsch is the 15th generation of his family to call Mannersdorf home. Located 30 miles south of Vienna on the Slovakian border, Martin farms his 11.5 hectares using organic, biodynamic, and sustainable practices. His vines are old, he harvests by hand, he crushes in an old wooden press from 1820, he ferments with native yeasts, and he ages his wines in older foudres.
This all adds up to a beautiful bottle of white wine. I’d highly recommend you pick up a few and enjoy with delicate, flaky white fish cooked in an herb/butter sauce. And make sure to include all the green vegetables you’d like! Gruner Veltliner is one of the few wines to pair nicely with asparagus, artichokes, and broccoli. Yum!
