The Grand Montmirail Gigondas Vieilles Vignes is back, and the 2017 vintage is just as good as the 2016 was. I can’t think of another producer in Gigondas or the Southern Rhone for that matter who consistently makes such incredible wines at such great prices.
Sure, Vintage 2016 was the one all the critics went wild for, but don’t be fooled into thinking 2017 was no good. Far from it and especially in Gigondas where some producers produced better wines in ’17 than ’16. Grand Montmirail might be one of those, and Table Wine has a retail exclusive on this one in Western North Carolina. Yep, we bought all 14 cases!

Let’s start with Jeb Dunnuck’s review: “A rock star of a Gigondas based on 60% Grenache, 30% Syrah, and 10% Mourvèdre, the 2017 Gigondas Vieilles Vignes boasts a deep purple color as well as a beautiful perfume of blackberries, sappy garrigue, ground peppercorns, and minty flowers. Medium-bodied, elegant, with beautiful complexity as well as minerality, drink this classic Gigondas any time over the coming 10-12 years.”
And not to be outdone, the Wine Advocate chimed in with an equally glowing review. “I found this estate’s 2017 Gigondas Vieilles Vignes irresistible. A blend of 65% Grenache and 35% Syrah, it’s full-bodied, with a velvety texture that perfectly carries complex, delicate notes of orange blossoms, red currants and red plums. Drink this delicious, fruit-forward wine from proprietor Yves Cheron over the next decade.”
Seriously, where else are you going to find a wine that made the top critics in the world swoon for less than $30 and as low as $25? You’re not going to! But trust me when I say that Vintage 2017 was very similar to 2016 in Gigondas. Warm, dry and sunny conditions stressed these old vines to their maximum potential and the resulting grapes were packed with the classic flavors of the Southern Rhone. And as is typically the case, Montmirail’s Gigondas drinks well now but it’s got plenty of cellar potential too.
And I’ve long been a fan of this estate’s wines. I think we’ve carried every vintage back to 2010. And over the years, I’ve come to recognize a Grand Montmirail “house style” of sorts. Their wines are always some of the most forward, plump and silky of any coming out of Gigondas. That’s what makes it so hard to lay these guys down but trust me, the patient will be rewarded.
Like the 2016, the 2017 is primarily Grenache from 65+ year old vines with Syrah and Mourvedre from 30+ year old vines. The old vines combined with the estate’s decision to de-stem and use a bit of new oak add to the pure pleasure factor of this wine. Bravo Grand Montmirail!
