Table Wine loves to give back to the Asheville community because it is this wonderful community that supports us. For 2011, we’ve chosen two great organizations to work with to help them raise money for their selfless causes. Mission Healthcare Foundation connects the generosity of a caring community with opportunities to improve lives through better healthcare. One of their main efforts is promoting breast cancer awareness and providing resources to breast cancer patients. Doing equally great work is the Animal Compassion Network which is proud to be the largest, non-profit, safe-for-life animal welfare organization in WNC. They strive to prevent the euthanasia of healthy, adoptable pets in our community by finding lifelong, stable and loving homes for companion animals in need.
Table Wine is committed to raising money for both of these dynamic organizations all year long. Thus, when you purchase any of the six following wines, we donate 10% of the proceeds back to MHF and ACN. In addition, we hold tastings at the store where you get the chance to “try before you buy” any of these great wines. Who ever thought that buying wine could be fun and philanthropic? 1. 2009 Bidoli Friulano Friuli, Italy – $10.99/bottle
Friulano is the name of a grape indigenous to the northeastern part of Italy, and it produces a clean, crisp and refreshing white wine with lovely notes of peach, apple, tropical fruits and zesty acidity.
2. 2010 Vallevo Chardonnay Marche, Italy – $8.99/bottle
Super fresh, unoaked, unadulterated Chardonnay that tastes like a ripe Chardonnay grape plucked straight off the vine. Fruit driven and easy to drink, this wine just bursts out of the glass with notes of ripe pear, spiced apple and assorted citrus fruits. A great back porch, daily wine that won’t break the bank.
3. 2009 Garofoli Montepulciano Rosé “Komaros” Marche, Italy – $12.99/bottle
There’s nothing like a good dry rosé on a hot summer day. Chill this one down, pop the cork and enjoy aromas and flavors of strawberry, cherry, peach and subtle spice. A great wine to serve with grilled salmon.
4. 2009 Tenuta Canale Pergolato Rosso Toscana, Italy – $8.99/bottle
This blend of Sangiovese and Cabernet Sauvignon comes from a tiny, family winery based in Chianti. It is just delicious, easy-drinking, “blue collar” red wine with notes of cherry, plum, earth and delicate spice. A great pizza/pasta guzzler.
5. 2007 Fattori Casabianca Chianti Colli Senesi, Italy – $11.99/bottle
This is one of the best Chianti values we’ve been able to find. Almost all Sangiovese, drinking this wine will remind some of their visit(s) to Tuscany. Medium bodied and zesty, this one offers up bright notes of black cherry, currant, sun baked earth and baking spices. Serve with classic Italian fare like chicken parm, lasagna or spaghetti and meatballs.
6. 2007 Vecchia Torre Salice Salentino, Italy – $10.99/bottle
Salice Salentino, located in the Puglia region of southern Italy, relies on two ancient grape varieties to make their sturdy, rustic red wines – Negroamaro and Malvasia Nera. As I said, this wine is rustic, earthy and spicy, but it’s just plain delicious with aromas and flavors of black plum, raisins, licorice and tobacco. Great with roasted sausages, peppers and onions.
