The rolling hills of the Gers département in southwestern France are covered by sunflowers, corn and vineyards which are used for the production of Armagnac and very fine, high quality/low cost wines. Vigneron Michael Duffour took over his family’s estate in the early 1980’s.He is a very talented grape grower and winemaker, and his white wine is one we count among our best values in the store.
Duffour works with the regional, traditional grapes of the region including Colombard, Ugni Blanc and Gros Manseng to make this white wine. His Colombard and Ugni Blanc are from old vines planted by his father back in the 1960’s, and those old vines lend this wine some serious punch.
The wine opens with a nose of ripe citrus, melon, tropical fruits and herbs leading into a zesty, thirst quenching palate of green apple, lime, melon and a touch of peach. In a blind tasting, we would guess Sauvignon Blanc in the $15+ price range, but we would be wrong.Let’s face it, if you like white wine, you’re going to continue drinking it even as the temperature drops. Give this one a shot…..you won’t be disappointed!
