Bohigas Xarel-lo 2019

White Wine Extreme Value - 2019 Bohigas Xarel-lo

The deals keep coming but the 2019 Bohigas Xarel-lo might take the prize for the white wine value of 2020! From one of our favorite, family-owned Cava estates, this still (not bubbly) white is pure, clean and light. Kind of like a cross between a Pinot Grigio and a Sauvignon Blanc, it’s very easy to drink.

My rep sent me a sample of the newly released 2019 vintage and I enjoyed it last night. For less than $12, this is an unparalleled white wine deal. There’s 14 cases up for grabs and it’s first come, first served.

Bohigas is a family-owned winery that has roots dating back to the 13th century. The estate is located in the Anoia River Valley, about 45 minutes west of Barcelona. Today, the family owns 300 hectares, all of which are farmed with organic practices and all of their Xarel-lo vineyards are situated in the cooler, higher altitude stretches of the valley. These cool, slow ripening sites yield wines with surprising character and nuance.

So what the heck is Xarel-lo? First and foremost, it’s a grape. And it’s generally considered the most important and the highest quality grape of the Penedes region of Spain. This white variety has red grape like anti-oxidative properties allowing the wines to have extended lees aging without oxidizing and retaining fresh flavors. Widely used in Cava production, it also makes pretty compelling still white wines like this one.

So what’s it taste like? I think the Pinot Grigio x Sauvignon Blanc comparison is quite accurate. It’s crisp, fresh and light but it’s far from lacking flavor. I get lots of pear, melon, and green apple up front with fresh herbs and leesy spice providing moderate complexity. COMPLETELY DRY and high toned, it’s refreshing, invigorating, and my pick for the top “porch pounder” of 2020!

In troubling times like this, wine brings me comfort and contemplation. But it’s rare that a sub-$10 bottle accomplishes that feat. This one does!
