Jean Manciat Macon Charnay 2018

White Burgundy Extreme Value - 2018 Jean Manciat Macon-Charnay

SOLD OUT! The 2018 Jean Manciat Macon-Charnay is an absurd value in high quality White Burgundy. From one of my favorite producers in the Maconnais, Manciat has scored big time in the highly rated 2018 vintage.

This is the vintage experts are calling one of the finest of the 21st century and this un-oaked, full flavored Chardonnay will go down as one of my best White Burg finds of all time. Just 60 bottles up for grabs.

SOLD OUT

Jean Manciat’s sustainably farmed vineyards can be toured on foot in just a few minutes. He farms his 5 hectares with great pride and passion and it shows in his wines. While many of the coops produced millions of bottles of insipid and uninspiring wine from their high yielding, machine harvested vineyards, Jean’s production stands in sharp contrast. He basically farms organically, his yields are incredibly low and he hand harvests all of his grapes.

Like many of the wines that get me amped, this is a very traditional and artisanally-made one. And like all great wines, Manciat really doesn’t do much to it. He works with old vines (most 25+ year old) grown in limestone soils, he ferments this one with native yeasts in stainless steel vats, and he let’s the wine “speak” for itself. I love what it has to say.

Here’s a Chardonnay that manages to balance richness and freshness in an effortless manner. It smells and tastes of crunchy apple, green pear, zesty citrus and fresh green herbs. The palate is zippy and invigorating but it turns a bit richer on the finish with a flinty/almondy savoriness usually only found in much more expensive White Burgs.

This is a steal at less than $25 but at less than $20, it’s just plain ridiculous. I bought my distributor’s last 6 cases and there’s 5 cases up for grabs here. A certain wine monger you might know bought a case for his house….needless to say, this will go fast. I hope you get some!
