Washington State, like Oregon and California, enjoyed an incredible vintage in 2012, but hardly anyone is talking about it. Everyone is raving about the 2012 Cabs from Napa and the 2012 Pinots from the Willamette Valley, and there’s plenty to rave about there, but don’t forget about Washington State. Wine Spectator said of the 2012 vintage in Washington: “Ideal conditions produced powerful wines with elegance,” and went on to rate the vintage 97 points. We couldn’t agree more, and our new Wine of the Weeks, the 2012 Seven Hills Cabernet Sauvignon is a product of this fabulous vintage and it’s made by one of the state’s pioneering producers.
Established in 1988, Seven Hills Winery is one of Washington’s oldest and most respected producers. Guided by founder, winemaker, and fourth generation farmer Casey McClellan, the winery works with fruit from some of the state’s top Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot vineyards to craft their award winning wines. Their 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon blends fruit from a variety of these sites, and they’ve really knocked it out of the park with this vintage.
Rated 91 points by The Wine Enthusiast and 90 points by both The Wine Spectator and The Wine Advocate, the 2012 Seven Hills Cabernet Sauvignon is a great way to sample a highly rated, delicious wine from this fantastic vintage without breaking the bank. I can honestly say that if this wine bore a Napa Valley designation on its label, it would be twice the price. A blend of 85% Cabernet Sauvignon, 6% Petit Verdot and the balance Cabernet Franc, Malbec, and Merlot that spent 16 months in 25% new oak, it offers up notes that will remind some of Bordeaux, but with more of the fruit stuffing one would expect from a North American wine. Cassis, black currant, cherry, graphite, tobacco and herbal aromas give way to a supple, medium bodied, slightly firm palate of dark fruit, cedar, spice, earth and herb. You can easily drink this one tonight, but it’s got at least 7 years of life ahead of it.
