1. 2016 Vina Maitia “Aupa Pipeño” (Maule Valley, Chile) – The minds of most, myself included, would not venture to Chile for a natural, light red wine rich in heritage. Yet this wine, made from 80% Pais and 20% Carignan is exactly that and more. Pipeño, the traditional method of winemaking in Chile, dates back to the 16th century and produces a fruit driven wine with abundant notes of cherry and raspberry as well as hints of dried herbs, fennel seed and thyme. Best served with a slight chill.

2. 2016 Pays D’Herault “Les Hérétiques” (Languedoc-Roussillon, France) – Reminiscent in many ways of Beaujolais, Les Hérétiques is a blend of 90% old vine Carignan and 10% Syrah. Half of the wine undergoes Carbonic Maceration, lending the wine freshness and a lighter color while the other half is fermented in barrel with a 30 day maceration. The combination results in a rustic wine with balanced tannin, bold dark fruit and a unique depth of flavor at this price point.

3. 2015 Adrien Berlioz, “Cuvée Rosa” (Savoie, France) – Winemaker Adrien Berlioz produces a small assortment of unique and refined wines that you won’t often see on a shelf and his 2015 Cuvée Rosa, made from 100% Mondeuse grapes is no exception. On the palate, the wine strikes a balance somewhere between Moulin-a-Vent and Crozes Hermitage, offering up well integrated spice notes, an elegant body, lively acidity and fine tannin.
