The Dumonts have farmed vineyards in the Aube district of Southern Champagne for over 200 years. Up until the 1980’s, the family just grew grapes and sold them to larger Champagne producers. But today, the three brothers Dumont bottle their own wines, and I’m happy they do.
Their Brut Tradition is composed of 90% Pinot Noir and 10% Chardonnay. And the combination of Aube’s warmer temperatures along with its kimmeridgian chalky/clay soils result in richer and more sumptuous wines with rounder and softer textures. Yet, their wines still possess the minerality that true Champagne is known for. And that’s what makes this wine so attractive!
This is no shy Champagne, far from it! In fact, I’d call this a pretty flashy and flamboyant Champagne. Ripe citrus, spiced apple, rhubarb and carmelized peach pop out on the nose followed my more complex notes of brioche, buttered toast and musky herbs. It is decidedly dry on the palate, yet rich, broad, and creamy at the same time. Simply put, it easily competes with and qualitatively destroys Champagnes from larger houses that cost twice the price.
With Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s upon us, this is the perfect bottle of bubbles to toast the holidays with. It’s real-deal Champagne, it’s a small grower/producer, and it’s super. Try it with sushi, caviar, or just drink away without food. Last year, this sold out in less than 2 weeks, so don’t wait until New Year’s Eve to pick some up.It will be gone by then, guaranteed. Cheers and Happy Holidays!
