When referencing the top estates for traditional Chateauneuf du Pape, Pegau is always at the top of the list, with other legends like Beaucastel, Vieux Telegraphe, and Vieille Julienne. And like other top producers of the region, Pegau’s 2016’s will go down as some of the finest wines they’ve ever produced. When you taste their 2016 Cuvee Maclura, you’ll know what I’m talking about!

This stuff is clicking on all cylinders my friends. Reminiscent of the 2016 Coudoulet de Beaucastel that many of you loved, this is no simple Cotes du Rhone. Not even close, as this one drinks more like Chateauneuf, and I’m not exaggerating. It starts with aromas of earth, smoked meat, spice and herb…….yes, it’s a bit funky at first. But with 5-10 minutes of air, this one really blooms. More opulent notes of plum and blackberry emerge, and the voluminous mouthfeel is balanced by zesty acidity. The finish is long and enjoyable, with classic notes of thyme, lavender and other Provencal herbs lingering. And though it’s drinking great now, it has near-term cellar potential. Drink now through 2025 or so.

In terms of technical data, the blend here is 60% Grenache, 20% Syrah, 10% Cinsault and 10% Mourvèdre from vineyards just 4 miles south of Chateauneuf du Pape. Farming is done organically, the vines are old, they don’t de-stem, and fermentation takes place with native yeasts in concrete tanks. This is about as “old-school,” natural, and traditional as it gets, and this is truly a “vin de terroir.” That means it tastes like the place it came from, and trust me, that’s a good thing.
