2015 Alla Costiera Prosecco – Prosecco Deal of the Year

Wine of the Week – The 2015 Alla Costiera Prosecco is the best Prosecco I have ever tasted!  I still remember the first time we tasted this wine with importer Jay Murrie, the man behind Piedmont Wine Imports.  It was revelatory.  The bubbles were finer and less frothy, the bouquet was intense with notes of white fruits and flowers, and the palate was smooth and almost creamy.  This was no ordinary Prosecco!  Jay went on to tell us about the history and methodology of the producer (we’ll get to that later), and it all made sense.  That was almost 4 years ago, and since then this incredible, certified organic, small batch Prosecco has become a staff and customer favorite.  The 2015 vintage arrived about a month ago after a long absence, I took a bottle home immediately, and I still say that the Alla Costiera is the best Prosecco I have ever tasted. Keep reading to learn more or trust me and stop by the store and pick some up.

2015 Alla Costiera Prosecco Extra Dry – On Sale Through Saturday, June 3

Sale Price: $14.99/bottle or just $13.59/bottle on your solid 6-pack (20% off)

I’ll let wordsmith Jay Murrie sum up the philosophy at Alla Costiera: “Filippo Gamba is a no-nonsense farmer. Back when nearly nobody cared about natural viticulture in Veneto, he transformed Alla Costiera into a scrupulously organic and low-intervention estate. After nearly two decades in charge of this successful small family domaine, Filippo is still thinking and acting like a young visionary winemaker: like he has something to prove.”  Keep it up Filippo! Today, he and his family farm a mere 7 hectares of vines just outside the village of Vo Vecchio in the Colli Eugenei hills.  In addition to being certified organic, they work with old vines in the 15 to 75 year age range and use native yeasts for their fermentations.  Even more impressive is the fact that they make their Prosecco in tiny batches, about 2,500 bottles at a time.  In a good year, Alla Costiera will produce only 500 cases of their Prosecco.  Small production does not always guarantee quality, but it does in this case!

Filippo Gamba of Alla Costiera.

Filippo Gamba, the man behind Alla Costiera.

You can certainly taste the difference Filippo’s passion and hard work make in this wine.  This is true small grower/producer Prosecco, and this is exactly the kind of wine that I like to champion.  Completely contrary in so many ways to the mass produced Proseccos that line the shelves at grocery stores, this is truly special wine.  It’s all in the bottle here folks, and the best way to experience what I’m talking about is to buy some! Carefully remove the cork, pour yourself a glass, and you will be greeted by pristine aromas of pear, apple, citrus and floral notes.  Take a sip, and I think you’ll taste the difference.  There’s a perfect balance between ripe and round orchard fruits and higher toned citrus fruits that just keeps you coming back for sip after sip.

I don’t know what else I can say about this one………….oh yeah, you’re gonna’ like it!  Stock up on this one while it’s here because it does run out.  If you’d like to try before you buy, just stop by the store on Friday, May 19th (4-7pm) as we’ll be pouring it. Of course, you can always email me at, and I’ll be glad to hold some for you through the end of the sale period.  Cheers and happy drinking and eating in Asheville!

We invite you to stop by the store this Friday to sample some of our new favorites!  Up first, it’s an estate-grown Prosecco from a family run estate — this is a rarity for Prosecco as most of these wines are made at large facilities.  Trust us, you will be able to taste the difference!  Up next, we’ll pour you a deliciously refreshing Arneis, one of the Piemonte’s most important white grapes.  To finish, you’ll taste an exquisite Barbera from old, organically farmed hillside vineyards……….this one’s got a little age on it too.  Translated, it’s drinking really well right now.  Stop by, taste, learn, and save on all of the featured tasting wines.

The Wines
Save big on all of the tasting wines!  Mix any 3 of them and save 10%, mix any 6 and save 15%, or mix any 12 and save 20%!

1. NV Tenuta Degli Ultimi “Ciacola” Prosecco Brut  (Conegliano-Veneto, Italy) – This estate-grown Prosecco comes from hillside vineyards in the village of Conegliano, long hailed as the best spot in the Veneto for Prosecco production.  Fermented completely dry, it offers up crisp notes of apple and tropical fruits, finishing with zesty acidity.  You’ll be hard pressed to find a better Prosecco for the money!
Tasting Price: $12.59 on mixed 3-packs | $11.04 in mixed six packs | $11.89 in mixed cases

2. 2015 Cordero di Montezemolo Roero Arneis (Piemonte, Italy) – Talk about an absolutely delicious, extroverted white!  Arneis is the grape, and it literally means “rascal” because it can be difficult to grow.  Whatever the case, Cordero di Montezemolo makes one of the richer, creamier versions out there.  With creamy pear, peach, golden apple, and floral notes, this calls to mind good White Burgundy but costs a fraction of the price.
Tasting Price: $16.19/bottle | $15.29 in mixed six packs | $14.44 in mixed cases

3. 2011 Borgo Moncalvo Barbera d’Asti Superiore (Piemonte, Italy) – Talk about a bargain in super high quality, perfectly aged, certified organic Piemonte red wine!  Most of Borgo Moncalvo’s Barbera was planted back in the 1950’s.  These old vines yield a hearty and robust style of wine with soaring aromas and flavors of ripe blueberry, raspberry, and spice.  The “bottle conditioning” on this one contributes a soft and supple texture.
Tasting Price: $15.29 in mixed 3-packs | $14.44 in mixed 6-packs | $13.59 in mixed cases

The Wines

1. NV Delamotte Champagne Brut – Delamotte comes from the House of Salon, and in our opinion, Salon is the single greatest Champagne on the planet.  They only make Salon in great vintage year, so when they don’t make it, all of that gorgeous Grand Cru fruit goes into this bottle. We’re of the firm belief that we should start with the best, and this is one of the best non-vintage Champagnes we’ve tasted this year.

2. NV Gruet Blanc de Noirs – Yep, great Methode Champenoise sparkling wine is made in New Mexico.  Gruet has been at it since 1984 and their Blanc de Noirs is one of the great domestic bubbly values.  Elegant and focused, with creamy vanilla and apple aromas and rich yet crisp flavors of baked pear and cinnamon bread.

3. NV Avinyo Cava Brut Reserve – Avinyo is one of the great family owned and operated, estate Cava houses, and the current release is as good as ever.  A traditional blend of Macabeu, Parellada, Xarel-lo made Méthode Champénoise with 100% free run juice and aged 18 to 22 months before being disgorged, this is always one of our favorite Cavas.

4. NV Francois Montand Brut Blanc de Blancs – Francois Montand grew up in Champagne, but relocated to the Jura region (just east of Burgundy) in the 1940’s.  These days, the firm makes some of the most dependable, reliable, and honest sparkling wine in the regions.  Adhering to the methods of Champagne, this lovely blend of Ugni Blanc, Colombard, and Chardonnay is dry, tart and lightly toasty.  It makes for a great, affordable sparkling wine that is good enough to drink on its own, but also perfect for making sparkling wine cocktails.

5. NV Belstar Prosecco Extra Dry – Year in and year out, Belstar is one of the best Prosecco values on the market.  Composed entirely of Glera grapes, it is light, fragrant and refreshing with tender notes of apple, melon, pear and flowers.  With low alcohol and a friendly fruitiness, this is one to buy at least two bottles of.

6. NV Sant Evasio Brachetto d’Aqui – We’ll finish up with one of the most unique sparkling wines in the world.  Brachetto yields a very low alcohol, sweet, and lightly fizzy wine that tastes like fresh squeezed strawberry juice.  Grab a bottle of this and a box of Blue Moon Truffles and call it a night!
