The best Prosecco in the world at Table Wine in Asheville, North Carolina.

2015 Alla Costiera Prosecco – Prosecco Deal of the Year

Wine of the Week – The 2015 Alla Costiera Prosecco is the best Prosecco I have ever tasted!  I still remember the first time we tasted this wine with importer Jay Murrie, the man behind Piedmont Wine Imports.  It was revelatory.  The bubbles were finer and less frothy, the bouquet was intense with notes of white fruits and flowers, and the palate was smooth and almost creamy.  This was no ordinary Prosecco!  Jay went on to tell us about the history and methodology of the producer (we’ll get to that later), and it all made sense.  That was almost 4 years ago, and since then this incredible, certified organic, small batch Prosecco has become a staff and customer favorite.  The 2015 vintage arrived about a month ago after a long absence, I took a bottle home immediately, and I still say that the Alla Costiera is the best Prosecco I have ever tasted. I’ll let wordsmith Jay Murrie sum up the philosophy at Alla Costiera: “Filippo Gamba is a no-nonsense farmer. Back when nearly nobody cared about natural viticulture in Veneto, he transformed Alla Costiera into a scrupulously organic and low-intervention estate. After nearly two decades in charge of this successful small family domaine, Filippo is still thinking and acting like a young visionary winemaker: like he has something to prove.”  Keep it up Filippo! Today, he and his family farm a mere 7 hectares of vines just outside the village of Vo Vecchio in the Colli Eugenei hills.  In addition to being certified organic, they work with old vines in the 15 to 75 year age range and use native yeasts for their fermentations.  Even more impressive is the fact that they make their Prosecco in tiny batches, about 2,500 bottles at a time.  In a good year, Alla Costiera will produce only 500 cases of their Prosecco.  Small production does not always guarantee quality, but it does in this case!

You can certainly taste the difference Filippo’s passion and hard work make in this wine.  This is true small grower/producer Prosecco, and this is exactly the kind of wine that I like to champion.  Completely contrary in so many ways to the mass produced Proseccos that line the shelves at grocery stores, this is truly special wine.  It’s all in the bottle here folks, and the best way to experience what I’m talking about is to buy some! Carefully remove the cork, pour yourself a glass, and you will be greeted by pristine aromas of pear, apple, citrus and floral notes.  Take a sip, and I think you’ll taste the difference.  There’s a perfect balance between ripe and round orchard fruits and higher toned citrus fruits that just keeps you coming back for sip after sip.

I don’t know what else I can say about this one………….oh yeah, you’re gonna’ like it!  Stock up on this one while it’s here because it does run out.  If you’d like to try before you buy, just stop by the store on Friday, May 19th (4-7pm) as we’ll be pouring it. Of course, you can always email me at josh@tablewineasheville.com, and I’ll be glad to hold some for you through the end of the sale period.  Cheers and happy drinking and eating in Asheville!
