GD Vajra Barolo Tasting

G.D. Vajra Piemonte Wines – Try Three For Free Wine Tasting

Saturday, October 14th from 2-5pm – Stop by the store this Saturday to sample some of the award winning Piemonte wines of Barolo-based G.D. Vajra.  And yes, we will be pouring their highly rated 2013 Barolo!

G.D. Vajra was founded in 1972 by Aldo Vaira and his wife Milena. For generations, the family sold their fruit to local growers, but upon inheriting the estate, Aldo began producing wines under his own label.  Today, G.D. Vajra is still a family affair — the winery was named after Aldo’s father, Giuseppe Domenico and Aldo and Milena work with their daughter Francesca and sons, Giuseppe and Isidoro.

The family owns almost 100 acres of vineyards in Vergne, the highest village in the Commune of Barolo and the wines are made from estate fruit that is triple sorted by hand. The Vaira’s winemaking philosophy is simple – they are not modern, they are not traditional. They practice sustainable farming and craft sensitive, transparent wines of place by patiently allowing the fruit to dictate its own evolution.  For more than 40 years, this wonderfully humble and hard-working family has crafted soulful and honest expressions of Nebbiolo, Barbera, Dolcetto, Moscato and Riesling.  Join us to taste through a few of our favorites from their collection and save big on all of the wines.

All of the featured tasting wines are being offered at 20% off by the bottle!  All sales must be tendered by the end of business on Friday unless other arrangements are made.  Email us at with questions.

1. 2015 Luigi Baudana Langhe Bianco Dragon (Piemonte, Italy) – The Vaira family purchased this immaculate estate in 2009, and this is the dramatically delicious white wine they make from their estate vineyards.  “This is delicate aromatically, boasting floral, peach, apple and lemon notes. There’s more weight on the palate, where the peach and apple flavors reign, playing out with citrus and spice accents. Shows fine harmony and texture. Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Nascetta and Riesling. Drink now through 2020.”

2. 2015 G.D. Vajra Langhe Rosso (Piemonte, Italy) – What a fantastic wine at a great price!  This is the entry-point into Piemonte wine and into the Vajra style of wine.  A blend of Barbera, Dolcetto, Nebbiolo, and a few others, it is fresh and fruitful, but there is good underlying structure.  Notes of fresh cherry, plum, underbrush, and spice are abundant in this sophisticated daily drinker.

3. 2013 G.D. Vajra Barolo “Albe” (Piemonte, Italy) – We’re finishing with the estate’s entry-level Barolo, but there’s nothing entry-level about this wine.  100% Nebbiolo from three estate vineyards, the wine is aged for 30 months in Slavonian oak before release.  As Antonio Galloni says, “The Albe may be the single best value in Barolo today. As for the 2013, don’t miss it!”  He goes on to say “Vajra’s 2013 Barolo Albe is beautifully perfumed, sensual and expressive in this vintage, with a bit less overt fruit and more aromatic/structural intensity than is often the case.” – Vinous Media – 92 points
Special Tasting Price: $34.39/bottle

Wine of the Week – 2008 G.D. Vajra Barolo “Albe”

Aldo and Milena Vajra are said to be some of the nicest people producing wine in Italy’s famed Piemonte zone. I have been a huge fan of their wines for many years and the 2008 version of their “entry-level” Barolo is the finest I’ve ever tasted.  Keep in mind that other Barolos from the same vintage that registered scores in this range start at $65 to $70!  This is a steal my friends, and I would highly recommend that you take advantage of the absurd price we’re offering it at.

Here’s what Antonio Galloni of The Wine Advocate had to say about the 2008: “The 2008 Barolo Albe is flat-out delicious. The Albe has often been a big step below the flagship Barolo Bricco delle Viole, but not in 2008. Although softer and rounder than that wine, there is plenty of vintage character in this vibrant, beautifully articulated Barolo. Sweet dark cherries, incense, licorice and tobacco are all wrapped around a pliant finish. The 2008 is accessible even today, and is a great – and I mean great – introductory Barolo for the year. Anticipated maturity: 2013-2020.”
