Incredible Values from Domaine Lafage – Free Wine Tasting

Saturday, October 7th from 2-5pm – Stop by the store this Saturday to taste two incredible values from Domaine Lafage!  We’ll debut the new vintages of their 92 point rated Novellum Chardonnay as well as their 93 point rated Narassa.  And we’ll be offering these wines up at the best prices in the country.

Year after year, Jean-Marc and Eliane Lafage make some of the best wines coming out of Southern France.  With vineyards scattered throughout the warm and sunny Roussillon region, they work with old vines to create sumptuous, delicious, and value-priced wines.  Join us as we pull the corks on a couple of their top values.  You won’t believe how good the 2016 Novellum Chardonnay is!  From 30 year old vines planted in rocky soils, it offers up loads of substance and style and it costs less than $15.  Equally impressive, the 2015 Domaine Lafage La Narassa is a total knockout!  A blend of old-vine Grenache and Syrah, it is lush, hedonistic, and pleasure-bent.  Stop by, taste, learn, and save big every Saturday at Table Wine.

All of the featured tasting wines are being offered at 20% off by the bottle!  All sales must be tendered by the end of business on Friday unless other arrangements are made.  Email us at josh@tablewineasheville.com with questions.

1. 2016 Domaine Lafage Novellum Chardonnay (Roussillon, France) – This easily qualifies as one of the best Chardonnay values in the world!  The Wine Advocate says, “A sensational wine that will compete with wines five times the price, the 2016 Novellum Chardonnay is the real deal and actually reminded me of a Chardonnay from Mark Aubert in California’s Sonoma County. White peach, crushed rocks, spice and brioche notes all emerge from this medium to full-bodied Chardonnay that has depth, layered texture and length. Buy it.” – Jeb Dunnuck – 92 points
Special Tasting Price: $11.19/bottle or $9.99/bottle on your solid case!

2. 2015 Domaine Lafage La Narassa (Roussillon, France) – La Narassa is sourced from the famed black schist soils of the Agly valley in the northern Roussillon near the village of Maury. It is made in a semi-ripasso by harvesting the Grenache in successive passes picking only the ripest clusters.  “Notes of cassis, toasted spice, chocolate and licorice all emerge from the 2015 Cotes du Roussillon Villages Lieu Dit La Narassa, which is 80% Grenache and 20% Syrah brought up in demi-muids. This hedonistic, downright sexy, ripe and layered beauty will drink nicely right out of the gate.” – Jeb Dunnuck – Wine Advocate – 93 points
Special Tasting Price: $15.19/bottle

Wyatt Wine Tasting at Table Wine in Asheville, North Carolina.

California Values from Wyatt – Try Three For Free Wine Tasting

Saturday, September 9th from 2-5pm – Join us this Saturday for a free wine tasting featuring three incredible values from Wyatt.  It’s Asheville’s best free wine tasting, and you’re invited.  Stop on by!

As Robert Parker of the Wine Advocate said, “these wines show impeccable attention to detail and a thorough knowledge of some admirable fruit sources.”  Wyatt is the negociant project of New York-based wholesaler/importer Polaner Selections, and these are brand new to North Carolina.  As the Polaner website says, “To help create added quality and character for our Wyatt wines, we work with several winery partners in California who help us to create a base wine that is itself well about the fray. And then to these base wines, we add a good percentage of wine coming from small lots of a much higher pedigree and appellation. These are often declassified wines, usually aged in top-quality french oak barrels, that come from wineries that sell their wine at $30-$40-$50+ a bottle. The result: the combination creates an amazing value and lots of character for the money.”  Simply put, these are among the best California wine values this guy has ever tasted.  Stop by, check them out for yourself, and save big!

The Wines
Save big on all of the tasting wines!  Mix any 3 of them and save 10%, mix any 6 and save 15%, or mix any 12 and save 20%!

1. 2015 Wyatt Chardonnay (Various Regions, California) – When you look at the pedigree of the California producers that Polaner works with, it makes sense why this wine is so good. Fruit comes from sources in Napa Valley, Russian River, and the Central Coast, and the resulting wine is elegant, stylish, and way too good to cost less than $15/bottle.  Moderately rich with some toasty oak notes along with ripe orchard fruit and buttered citrus notes, it’s a ton of wine for the money.

2. 2015 Wyatt Pinot Noir (Various Regions, California) – Most of the grapes for the Wyatt Pinot Noir hail from the Central Coast (Santa Barbara, Santa Rita Hills) with a smaller portion coming from Carneros and Sonoma Coast sites.  The full fruited character of the Central Coast fruit melds beautifully with the spicy, earthier nuances of the Carneros and Sonoma Coast fruit to create an under-$20 Pinot Noir that is simply awesome.

3. 2015 Wyatt Cabernet Sauvignon (Various Regions, California) – Like Wyatt’s Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, the Cabernet over-delivers in a big way.  Fruit comes from prime Napa sites in Calistoga and Oakville along with a bit of stuff from the Santa Cruz Mountains.  The resulting wine is beautifully balanced, pure, and way better than any other under-$15 California Cab I’ve ever tasted.

1. 2016 Le Grand St. Vincent Touraine Blanc (Loire Valley, France) – Like Sancerre, but hate paying the price?  Here’s the solution!  100% stainless steel fermented Sauvignon Blanc from the Middle Loire, this is just classic, brisk, and refreshing white wine that flows with bright citrus, herb and mineral notes.

2. 2016 Domaine Vetriccie Ile de Beaute Blanc (Corsica, France) – This stainless steel fermented blend of Chardonnay and Vermentino literally smells like a sunny day.  Bursting with fresh apple, peach, citrus, honeysuckle and gentle spice notes, this will perk up your day in no time.  Easy drinking, uncomplicated, clean and fresh, this is just silly good!

3. 2015 Marchetti Rosso Conero “Castro di San Silvestro” (Marche, Italy) – It’s our new Case of the Month and it’s an insane value in real-deal, honest and authentic Italian red wine. I’m a sucker for simple, honest, easy drinking table wines.  Heck, that’s what I named my store!  Simply put, wine doesn’t have to be expensive to be good, and we’re going to prove that to you this Friday.  First up, the Trevini Sangiovese “Rubicone” from Italy’ s Emilia-Romagna region offers up tons of pure chugging pleasure.  Low in tannin, and offering up clean notes of ripe cherry, strawberry and herb notes, it’s a great candidate for a Marco’s pizza.  Up next, the 92 point rated Carlos Serres Rioja is 100% Tempranillo with plenty of character.  Showcasing lots of ripe dark fruits, soft spices, and juicy, fine grained tannins, this is an absolute no-brainer.  To finish, the Barbanera Ser Passo Toscana Rosso is super ripe and pleasure bent.  Mainly Sangiovese with little bits of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, it’s soft, lush, smooth and delicious.  There you go, a trio of perfect “Tuesday Night Wines” that all retail for less than $12!  Stop by, taste, learn and save big on all of the featured tasting wines.

2. 2015 Carlos Serres Rioja “Tempranillo Old Vines” (Rioja, Spain) – Carolos Serres’ entry level red doesn’t read nor drink like an entry level wines.  Composed entirely of Tempranillo from 50+ year old vineyards from choice vineyard sites around Haro, the wine is fermented in stainless steel and aged in French and American oak for 6 months.  The resulting wine is surprisingly rich and layered with notes red and black fruits along with complex spice notes.  With moderate tanning and acidity (aka structure), this one works well with or without food.  92 points – James Suckling

Save big on all of the tasting wines!  Mix any 3 of them and save 10%, mix any 6 and save 15%, or mix any 12 and save 20%!

1. 2016 Vallevo Chardonnay (Abruzzo, Italy) – You’ll be hard pressed to find a better no-oak Chardonnay for under $10 than this one.  Vallevo puts out several great values that grace our shelves (they’re the same ones who make that Pecorino that so many of you love), and this is always pure, juicy, Chardonnay goodness.  Flowing with ripe apple, pear, melon, and light floral nuances, it’s dry, crisp, and refreshing………and cheap!

2. 2016 Gerberas Garnacha (Aragon, Spain) – I was blown away by this wine when I had it this past weekend with a good old cheeseburger.  Pure Garnacha from 30 year old vines, it is fermented in stainless steel.  The resulting wine is fat, plush, juicy and delicious.  It is one of my top under-$10 red wine picks in the store!

3. 2013 Paris Valley Road Heritage Red Wine (Various Regions, California) – I honestly don’t know how this wine can sell for less than $12!  It’s all estate fruit from vineyards just north of Paso Robles, it’s aged in real French and American oak barrels, and it’s awesome!  A blend of 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 34% Zinfandel and the balance in Syrah, Petite Sirah and Merlot, it offers up loads of ripe dark fruit along with subtle notions of fig, espresso, chocolate and spice.  Trust me, you’re going to dig it!

Syrah Wine Tasting at Table Wine in Asheville, North Carolina.

Perfectly Aged Syrah and Others – Try Three for Free Wine Tasting

Saturday, July 15 from 2-5 p.m. – If you’ve never tried a perfectly aged Syrah, this is your chance!  The 2003 Cougar Crest Syrah is a feast for the senses and we’re going to pour it for you along with two other Syrah based wines this Saturday.  Trust me, you don’t want to miss this tasting!

Some call it Syrah, some call it Shiraz, but whatever you want to call it, it’s one of the most distinct and noble of all red varietals.  Typically referred to as Syrah in the Northern Hemisphere and Shiraz in the Southern Hemisphere, the grape yields a variety of styles of wine.  From lovely dry rosés and jammy fruit bombs to savory, complex reds, this is a grape that can’t be pigeonholed.  Join us for a Syrah adventure where we’ll pour you a diverse lineup of wines. Up first, it’s the lovely Le Petit Diable Rosé from France’s Provence region — dry, crisp, and aromatic, this is one of our top selling pink wines this summer. Up next, the Jam Jar Shiraz is an ever-so-slightly sweet red wine from South Africa — loaded with ripe and jammy berry notes, it’s just off-dry and perfect red for bbq.  The top wine of the tasting is the sensational 2003 Cougar Crest, a wine that truly shows the savory, spicy, complex side of Syrah.  Words don’t do it justice — stop by and taste it.  You won’t be disappointed!

All of the featured tasting wines are on sale the day of the tasting: take 10% off if you mix any 3, 15% off if you mix any 6, or 20% off if you mix any 12.

1. 2016 Le Petit Diable Cotes de Provence Rosé (Provence, France) – This one comes to us from the same folks who made the MIP rosé, a top seller last summer.  A classic blend of Syrah, Cinsault and Grenache, it is light, delicate, aromatic and oh-so easy to drink on warm summer days.
Tasting Price: $14.39 in mixed 3-packs | $13.59 in mixed 6-packs | $12.79 in mixed cases

2. 2015 Jam Jar Sweet Shiraz (Western Cape, South Africa) – At 12.5% alcohol, this one is really just gently sweet.  It’s more about fresh, ripe, and overt fruit flavors, and I find it quite delicious.  Blueberry, dark cherry and dark chocolate notes flow through this fun and easy drinking red from South Africa.
Tasting Price: $10.89 in mixed 3-packs | $10.19 in mixed 6-packs | $9.59 in mixed cases

2. 2003 Cougar Crest Syrah (Columbia Valley, Washington) – Like Cougar Crest’s 2003 Merlot (which we poured yesterday), this is an incredible deal in pre-aged red wine.  In case you didn’t know, Syrah does wonderful things in Washington State, and this one is proof positive.  Showing the more secondary and savory notes that Syrah develops with time (spice, smoked meat, dried fruit) this one is still fully kicking. Lush in texture, intense in flavor, and the perfect accompaniment to grilled lamb, you’re gonna’ love it!
Tasting Price: $22.49 in mixed 3-packs | $21.24 in mixed 6-packs | $19.99 in mixed cases

Merlot Tasting at Table Wine in Asheville, North Carolina.

Merlot Find of the Year – Free on Fridays Wine Tasting

Friday, July 14 from 4-7 p.m. – The 2003 Cougar Crest Merlot is one of our red wine finds of the year.  And no, that’s not a typo, we’re pouring you a 14 year old wine that is drinking wonderfully right now!  Taste that one along with two other Merlot-based wines.

Before you dismiss this tasting, you should know that Merlot is one of the noble varietals.  The grape has been used for ages as a stand-alone as well as with Cabernet Sauvignon to produce bold, full bodied, ample red wines.  And it ages really well too!  Don’t believe me?  Stop by this Friday to taste a perfect example.  Before we get to that one, we’ll pour you the Anterra Merlot to start.  An un-oaked version from Italy’s Veneto region, it is soft, easy drinking, and affordable.  Up next, the Pedroncelli Merlot comes from one of Sonoma’s oldest wineries.  Round, soft, plush and smooth, it is a classic example of California Merlot.  Last but not least is that Merlot find of the year from Washington State’s Cougar Crest.  Wow!  Talk about a sumptuous red wine with layers of port-like cassis, roasted fig, plum and chocolate.  I’ll leave the rest up to your imagination.  Stop by, taste, learn, and save big on all of the tasting wines.

All of the featured tasting wines are on sale the day of the tasting: take 10% off if you mix any 3, 15% off if you mix any 6, or 20% off if you mix any 12.

1. 2015 Anterra Merlot (Veneto, Italy) – This Merlot is not hard to understand.  Fermented entirely in stainless steel, it offers up aromas and flavors of ripe cherry, plum and spice.  This medium bodied and easy going red would work great with simple pasta dishes or comfort food staples like barbecue or burgers.
Tasting Price: $6.29 in mixed 3-packs | $5.94 in mixed 6-packs | $5.59 in mixed cases

2. 2014 Pedroncelli Merlot (Sonoma County, California) – This is just good old American Merlot from one of Sonoma’s oldest and most dependable producers.  Round, smooth, plush and loaded with ripe cherry, plum, vanilla and oak spice, this is an easy one to wrap your head around.
Tasting Price: $15.29 in mixed 3-packs | $14.44 in mixed 6-packs | $13.59 in mixed cases

2. 2003 Cougar Crest Merlot (Columbia Valley, Washington) – Founded in 2001, Cougar Crest is a family owned and operated winery with prime vineyards in Washington’s Walla Walla Valley.  In case you didn’t know, most insiders believe that Washington (not California) is home to our country’s best Merlot.  I concur and this wine is the evidence.  The 14 years of bottle maturation have done great things for this wine — the tannin has softened, the aromas and flavors have taken on a Vintage Port like nuance, and the overall impression is one I typically find in wines that cost a lot more.  Oh yeah, the current release of this wine goes for $40.  Enjoy!
Tasting Price: $22.49 in mixed 3-packs | $21.24 in mixed 6-packs | $19.99 in mixed cases

Saturday, May 6 from 2-5pm – Join us to sample some great warm weather wines ideal for the spring and summer seasons.  Taste a white, a dry rosé, and a medium bodied red handpicked by Team Table Wine for your drinking pleasure!

There’s something about the spring that is just magical.  The flowers and trees are in full bloom, the landscape is green and full of life, and my wine preferences shift.  I tend to move from heavier, heartier foods and wines to fresher and livelier selections as the temperatures rise.  If you agree, stop by the store and let me share some of my favorite warm weather wines with you!  Up first, it’s a brand new Pinot Grigio from Argentina.  This one is rounder and more aromatic than most Pinot Grigio’s in this price range.  I think it would be great for sipping by the pool or on the beach or with richer seafood dishes.  Up next, it’s a new arrival dry rosé from Provence, and it’s a good one.  Flowing with gentle red fruits, ripe citrus, and mineral, I could drink this one liberally with any sort of grilled fish and/or vegetables.  To finish, it’s the new vintage of Barbera from Italy’s famed Vallana estate.  I love the purity and honesty of this medium bodied, slightly rustic red from one of the Piemonte’s greatest producers.  Enjoy it with just about any sort of meat off the grill.  I’ve done it again — writing up these tastings always makes me hungry!  Stop by on Saturday, taste, learn, and save big on all of the featured tasting wines.  Can’t make it by, but want to place an order?  Just email me at josh@tablewineasheville.com.

Susana Balbo Wine Tasting

Free Wine Tasting – Focus on Susana Balbo

Susana Balbo is recognized as one of Argentina’s greatest winemakers as well as one of the greatest winemakers in the world.  Stop by the store this Friday to sample some of her finest Argentinian reds!

Susana Balbo was Argentina’s first female enologist, graduating with honors from Don Bosco University in Mendoza in 1981.  Today, she is one of the most respected wine figures in Argentina and has been elected three times as President of Wines of Argentina.  The recipe for her success is three core philosophies:

1. Hands-on viticulture – Susana doesn’t just make wine, she is also involved with every detail of grape-growing.  Great wines are made in the vineyard.

2. Sustainable and Organic Agriculture – This method of farming conserves resources and preserves the health of the soil.  It also maintains vine health.  Again, great wines are made in the vineyard.

3. Innovation – She’s not afraid to experiment with new techniques and technologies.  She was the first in Argentina to conduct all of her fermentations in concrete eggs.  The egg’s porous concrete breathes like oak yet allows the wine to develop as if it were made in stainless steel, resulting in a pure expression of fruit with a richer, more complex mouthfeel.

1. 2013 BenMarco Malbec (Mendoza, Argentina) – Starting in 1999, Susana Balbo crafted a line of wines to showcase the ripe fruit expression of her sustainably farmed Mendoza vineyards. The philosophy is a simple one: grow great grapes and make wines with minimal intervention that are true to their place.  “The nose is really floral and fruit-driven (black fruit), a little spicy and displaying elegance and poise. The palate is vibrant and focused with pure fruit and silky, fine tannins to make it really drinkable. A great Malbec from Uco and very nicely priced.” – Wine Advocate – 92 points
Special Tasting Price: $15.99/bottle

2. 2014 Susana Balbo Cabernet Sauvignon Signature (Mendoza, Argentina) – From Susana’s home estate, this wine easily competes with Napa Cabs that cost twice the price.  “Beautiful dark fruit and raspberry character. Full body, velvety tannins and bright fruit. Pretty and drinkable. A pure and delicious wine.” – James Suckling – 93 points
Special Tasting Price: $19.99/bottle

3. 2014 BenMarco Expresivo (Mendoza, Argentina) – This is the top wine in the BenMarco line, and in 2014, the blend is 80% Malbec and 20% Cabernet Franc.  It was #24 on James Suckling’s “50 Best Value Wines Under $50.00” in 2016.  “This is great wine with fabulous transparency and clarity showing blackberry, blueberry and floral character. Full body, ultra-fine tannins and a superb finish. 80% malbec and 20% cabernet franc. A wine that gives pleasure now but will be even better in 2020.” – James Suckling – 96 points
Special Tasting Price: $29.59/bottle
