Join us this Friday, September 12th any time between 4 and 7 p.m. to “wine down” your work week and get your week end off to a good start with the best wine tasting in Asheville! This week, the refined and highly intelligent Richard McKinney, from Tryon Distributing, will be pouring a tremendous selection of highly rated Spanish wines that sell for a song. Richard was in Spain earlier this summer, so this is a great chance to taste, listen and learn from a guy who’s been there and done that.
We’ll start with the 2013 Naia Verdejo from Rueda, one of Spain’s leading white wine zones. Made with some seriously old vine “stuff,” this is a serious white wine that explodes on the palate with intense citrus fruits, pungent herbs and mineral. Up next, the 2013 Bodegas Vina Nora Albarino is a wonderful rendition of one of Spain’s most beloved white grapes. Subtle, complex, and beautfully aromatic, it glides across the palate with notes of spiced pear, apple, tropical fruits and flowers. If you don’t like white wines, you may want to get checked out by your doctor, but until then, we’ve got some reds for you to try too.
The 2012 Bodegas Nekeas Vega Sindoa El Chaparral Old Vine, a 100% Garnacha-based cuvée from Navarra in Northern Spain. It is a fresh, spicy and herbaceous Spanish wine that will make many think of Cotes du Rhone. Bigger, richer and bolder in style, the 2011 Volver Tempranillo is 100% varietal and spends 18 months in new French oak before it is bottled. Dark berries, violets, wood smoke and spicy oak notes inform the nose and palate of this full bodied, rich, layered red wine that drinks well above it’s price point. And to finish up, we head south into Jumilla with the 2009 Bodegas Luzon “Altos de Luzon.” A blend of half Monastrell, 25% Cabernet Sauvignona and 25% Tempranillo aged for a year in French and American oak, it is a captivating wine with plenty of depth, richness and nuance. Wines with this much “stuff” going on usually cost a lot more than this one. See if you agree with us — stop by, taste, learn and save this Friday at Table Wine.
