Ostatu Rioja Blanco 2013

2013 Ostatu Rioja Blanco

Ostatu consistently makes one of the best white wine values in the world, and their 2013 Rioja Blanco is better than ever.  What if you could find a white wine that possessed the brightness and freshness of a Sauvignon Blanc, the lushness and texture of a Chardonnay, and the mineral complexity of a great Loire Valley white?  Even better, what if you could find all of that for less than $15 per bottle?  You’d probably buy it right? The Ostatu Rioja Blanco is all of that and a little bit more, and it’s our Wine of the Week.  Here’s the deal:

Regular price on this beautiful white wine is $13.99/bottle – That’s a bargain!

$12.59/bottle when you buy 6 bottles (10% off)
$11.89/bottle when you buy 12 bottles (15% off)

Bodegas Ostatu is a family winery located in the heart of the Rioja Alavesa region, and winery dates back over two hundred and fifty years.  The Saenz de Samaniego family farm old vineyards composed of chalk and clay, and these well drained, infertile soils give their wines a very distinctive character.  The family is now helped by Hubert de Bouard de Laforest of the famed Bordeaux estate Chateau Angelus, and ever since he took the consulting job here, Ostatu’s wines have improved dramatically.  By taking advantage of the estate’s old vines and the vineyard’s unique orientation, he has helped the family gain recognition for their wines on the world stage.

Their white wine is made up of 90% Viura and 10% Malvasia from vineyards in the 60 to 70 year age range.  Fermentation takes place in stainless steel to preserve this old vine purity and goodness, and the resulting wine is nothing less than astounding.  The nose smells beautifully of pear, white peach, lemon, apple, spice and mineral.  The palate is steely, dry, and fresh, but medium to full bodied with assertive flavors of orchard and citrus fruits along with notions of green herbs and mineral.  If all of this sounds bewildering, just stop by this Friday, January 30th between 4 and 7 p.m. and give this one a try.  Otherwise, you can either stop by and pick some up or email us at josh@tablewineasheville.com or call us at 828.505.8588 if you’d like us to set some aside for you for up to 7 days.
