Barbera has become one of my go-to reds over the past couple of years. Richly fruited, yet refreshing and zesty, it’s a versatile red to enjoy with or without food. And in the hands of an “all-star” like Elio Perrone, the grape is taken to new heights. Perrone is most well-known for his award-winning Moscato, but in 1999, he purchased the esteemed Mongovone vineyard in Asti. Home to some of the oldest vines in the region, it yields an incredibly distinctive and flavor-packed Barbera.

And that’s certainly what’s in the glass here! 100% Barbera, the wine is aged for 6-10 months in French oak. Deeply colored, nearly opaque, it opens with aromas of dark berries, flowers, and perfectly integrated oak. On the palate, it is rich, ripe, and beautifully textured with flavors of dark cherry, blueberry, clove, and allspice. Medium to full bodied, with silky tannins and perfect acidity, drink it over the next few years.

That’s what I have to say about it. Here’s what Wine Spectator said: “Offering saturated aromas and flavors of boysenberry, blueberry and spicy oak, this effusive red shouts from the rooftops. Balanced in an exuberant way, with fine length. Drink now through 2020. 4,000 cases made.” – BS

Believe me, this is a stunning red wine value, and it will sell out fast. Cheers and happy drinking and eating in Asheville!
