I love Red Burgundy. It might be my absolute favorite, but finding good ones for less than $20 is challenging to say the least. I’ve got great news for you — the 2017 Domaine du Prieure Bourgogne Rouge is one of the top Red Burgundy values I’ve tasted in my 20 year career. And even better, it’s less than $20! From a small, family run domaine based in Savigny-les-Beaune, this wine exudes class, complexity, and sophistication at an incredible price. I was only able to secure 10 cases — those will not last long.
2017 Domaine du Prieure Bourgogne Rouge
Top Red Burgundy value of the highly rated 2017 vintage!
“After seven years of crops shrunk by hail, frost, rot and nasty insects, 2017 has delivered a generous Burgundy vintage.” So says English Master of Wine Jancis Robinson. And when she says generous, she’s referring to the high quantity and quality of the year. Master of Wine and Burgundy expert Clive Coates reports that “2017 continues the recent run of high quality vintages, and looks like being even better than 2016 and 2015.” Good quality plus larger volume means there are great deals to be found, and I’d say I found a pretty good one here.
Since 1921, at the entrance of the sleepy village of Savigny-les-Beaune resides this lovely estate. Stephen Maurice is the third generation of his family to tend the vine. He makes some superb Premier Crus, but his far from simple Bourgogne Rouge is his top value. From a single plot of 40+ year old Pinot Noir vines, Maurice harvests all of his grapes by hand. All of the fruit is de-stemmed, and fermentation is carried out in stainless steel, followed by 10 months of aging in French oak (10% new).
Pouring a beautiful, deep ruby color and boasting a nose of crushed strawberry, morello cherry, smoky sage, and fine spice, this does not look or smell like a sub-$20 Burgundy. And it doesn’t taste that way either. On the palate, it’s medium-bodied, quite rich with ripe red fruits, and laced with fine and ripe tannin. I suppose you can lay this down for 3 to 5 years, but why bother? It’s drinking so well right out of the gate! Enjoy this pure and smooth textured red by itself or serve with roast chicken, pork tenderloin, or salmon.
Like I said earlier, there’s just 10 cases available. At less than $20 and as low as $16, I can guarantee you this won’t last long. Stop by the store and pick some up or use the contact for below with questions and/or orders. Until we meet again, cheers to happy drinking and eating in Asheville.
