Things are changing on the Oregon wine scene, and I am quite pleased by the new developments. Sure, Pinot Noir still rules, but some of the state’s newer and more progressive producers are experimenting with other grapes as well as different winemaking techniques. And they’re proving that Oregon can do more than just Pinot Noir. Have you tried Oregon Gamay yet? You need to. How about Oregon Chenin Blanc? You’re gonna’ love that too! 1. 2018 Division-Villages Chenin Blanc ‘L’Isle Verte’ (Yakima Valley, Washington) – Division Winemaking Company has become one of my favorite domestic producers…….period! They work with growers and vineyards throughout Oregon and Southern Washington to produce delicious, soulful, distinctive wines that won’t break the bank. Their Chenin Blanc comes from the 40 year old Willard Vineyard, one of the oldest Chenin Blanc sites in the Pacific Northwest. Showing Loire Valley-like notes of lime, green apple, and salty mineral, this is one of the best domestic Chenins this palate has tasted.
2. 2018 Soléna Cellars Pinot Gris (Willamette Valley, Oregon) – This one really grabbed me when I tasted it recently. It’s a rocking good version of Oregon Pinot Gris that shows lots of richness and opulence without being heavy. Wine Enthusiast writes: “This is a delicious wine that offers a riot of cut pear dusted with cinnamon. It’s further enlivened by appealing minerality, with the freshness of spring water over clean rock. The finish goes on indefinitely.” – 92 points
3. 2018 Gamine Grenache (Applegate Valley, Oregon) – Here’s a tiny production wines from our friends at Division Winemaking Company. It comes from Mae’s Vineyard, in Southern Oregon, and it’s managed by Herb Quady who previously managed the vineyards for Randall Graham’s Bonny Doon operation. He farms the site organically and Division ferments this one with carbonic maceration. We’ll tell you all about that process at the tasting. For now, I’ll just say that this is freshy-fresh, super juicy, and delicious.
4. 2018 Division-Villages Gamay ‘Les Petits Fers’ (Various Regions, Oregon) – Oregon is making incredible Gamay and the folks at Division are leading the way. Their ‘Les Petits Fers’ bottling comes from sites in the Willamette Valley and Umpqua AVA’s, and it’s a dead ringer for really good Cru Beaujolais. Showing lovely purity, with sensational notes of summer strawberry, white pepper, and herb. Fabulous!
