Biale has long been considered one of California’s top Zinfandel specialists. And while many of their Zins fetch $40-$50+, this is without a doubt the winery’s top value. It’s a throwback to the old days of Zinfandel when California’s wine-growing families made wine for every-day consumption.

It all started in the 1940’s when 14 year-old Aldo Biale helped his mother to make ends meet by selling eggs, produce, and jugs of the family’s homemade Zinfandel to friends. Over the old “party line” phone system, the code words “a Black Chicken” signified a jug of bootleg wine and this tactic kept nosy neighbors and the authorities from finding out about Aldo’s underground Zinfandel operation.

Ok, fun and cool story, but what’s the wine like Josh? Trust me, it’s great and I truly appreciate this wine’s “throwback style.” Coming from old heritage vineyards in Napa, Sonoma and Mendocino, this is one of those wines that will get the juices flowing. Bright, lifted, and seamless, this one offers up gorgeous notes of brambly raspberry and cherry fruit along with that classic peppery spiciness. The palate is full and ripe, yet silky and fine grained with terrific balance.

Another interesting fact is that the winery only makes 500 cases of this wine! Last year was the first vintage and it didn’t even make it to North Carolina. And this year’s release sold out with our wholesaler in 1 day. Luckily, I was able to secure 13 cases for Table Wine and trust me, you won’t find this one anywhere else in town. Biale fans should act fast if they want to snag any of this one.

With Christmas just 3 weeks away, this “party in a bottle” is the perfect festive feast wine. Enjoy it with herb crusted lamb, turkey and cranberries, or other holiday culinary classics.
