Steve Matthiasson is a rock star. Winemaker of the Year in 2012 for Food and Wine, he was also named Winemaker of the Year by the San Francisco Chroncile in 2014. Yep, he’s a good winemaker, but he’s also a farmer. In fact, he grows the grapes that go into many upper-90’s rated, Parker and Galloni wines.

In addition, he and his wife Jill are just super-kind folks. And the Matthiasson Tendu White kinda’ reminds me of them. Lynn and I hung out with Jill and Steve on our most recent trip to California, and that is where I first tasted this wine. It’s charming, it’s honest, and it’s real — just like Team Matthiasson.

So what is it? It’s 75% Vermentino, the delicious white grape that is crushed with reckless abandon by tourists in Sardinia and Cinqueterre. 20% Colombard, the zesty white grape from Southwestern France, adds a nice zip. And a splash of Napa Valley Chardonnay, just 5%, adds a bit of richness. That’s a lot of percentages, but the key one is the 33% extra wine you get. Yep, this one comes in a liter, and it’s ridiculously delicious.
