Spain does so much more than Rioja, Priorat, and Ribera del Duero. Don’t get me wrong, I love the wines from those respected regions, but I’m finding myself drawn more and more to some of the country’s more obscure grapes and regions. Every tried a Txakoli from Spain’s Basque region? What about Verdejo from Rueda? You’ll get to try both of those refreshing whites, and we’ll end the tasting with a sensational red from a tiny, avant garde producer located in Valencia. 1. 2018 Doniene Gorrondona Txakoli (Basque Region, Spain) – I have come to love, love, love the white wines of Spain’s Basque Country. Composed of native grapes with names like Hondarrabi Zuri, the wines are bottled with some naturally occurring ‘spritz’ and they taste especially good in the spring and summer. This one offers up zesty notes of lime, green apple, lemon, and salty minerality. Yum!
2. 2017 Garciarevalo Casamaro Blanco (Rueda, Spain) – If you like crisp, herbaceous Sauvignon Blanc, you’ll probably like this one. Rueda is in the central part of Spain, and it’s here that producers first started fermenting their whites in stainless steel. And Garciarevalo was at the forefront of that movement. Their Casamaro is 100% Verdejo from vines ranging in age from 15 to 145 years! Fresh and highly aromatic, it exudes notes of pungent, briny notes of citrus and green herbs.
