Table Wine owner Josh Spurling is excited to open and taste 5 of his favorite wines with you this Friday. Table Wine focuses on wines from family owned and operated wineries where the folks who run the show own their vineyards and control quality from vineyard to bottle. We don’t sell “Bologna Wines” or those packed with artificial fillers and enhancers – we sell fresh, hand made wines from the best up and coming estates in the world. 1. 2010 Domaine Plouzeau Touraine Blanc, France
Tangy, Citrus Zest, Minerally Perfume!
Marc Plouzeau just doesn’t mess around. Since taking over his family’s estate in the late 1990’s, he’s converted all of his vineyards to organics and he continues the tradition of doing everything by hand in a truly artisan fashion. This is lovely Sauvignon Blanc built around a framework of white peach and tangy citrus with subtle notes of flint and wet stone.
2. 2009 I Stefanini Soave “Il Selese”, Italy
Dry, But Intense and Perfumed.
This has been a great seller since day one of Table Wine’s existence. The estate is run by the Tessari family, with the young Francesco handling winemaking and his father Valentino doing most of the vineyard work. They are organic and their wine is based on Garganega, the grape that is “in charge” of making all of the best Soaves. It is surprisingly rich and complex with peach, floral and almond notes leading into a palate packed with rich orchard fruit and subtle nutty flavors.
3. 2009 Montesecondo Rosso di Toscana, Italy
A True Taste of Tuscany
Silvio and Catalina Messana are among the new wave of Tuscan vignerons. They farm their vineyards biodynamically without the use of any synthetic chemicals whatsoever and they make their wines in a truly artisan fashion. This super savory red is almost all Sangiovese and it is one of those wines that is hard to put down once poured in a glass. It’s not heavy or big, but it is the what wine once was and should continue to be – completely and utterly drinkable! Cherry, plum and oregano and spice notes flow out of this light to medium bodied red. Drink it liberally with pasta with marinara or other red sauce dishes.
4. 2010 Domaine du Cros Marcillac, France
Pinot Noir meets Cab Franc
Marcillac is a small wine region in southwestern France that lies east of Cahors. The wines of the region rely primarily on the indigenous Fer Servadou grape, which sounds pretty exotic, but tastes delicious. It is believed that the grape is a cross of Gamay and Cabernet Sauvignon, but who really knows? All I know is that it is delicious and offers up wonderful notes of raspberry, blackberry, violet and spices. Josh likeys this one a lot!
5. 2006 Izadi Rioja Reserva, Spain
Tastes Like $30 Wine
Here is an extreme value in modern Rioja. The Izadi estate was started by the Anton family in 1987, and they also run a One Star Michelin restaurant in Vitoria. Winemaking is handled by Mariano Garcia (one of Spain’s most famous) and Angel Ortega and this is 100% Tempranillo aged in new American oak. Juicy blueberry and blackberry fruit mingle with cedar and spice box elements to make this smooth and complex wine an absolute steal.
