1. 2012 Torre dei Beati Pecorino ” (Abruzzo, Italy) – The Pecorino grape (from pecora, meaning sheep) is an ancient varietal that is said to have been domesticated from local wild grapes. The tiny Torre dei Beati Estate is mentioned in Ian D’Agata’s book “Native Wine Grapes of Italy” as one of the regions top three producers of this unique white wine. Beautifully aromatic, this one bursts out of the glass with aromas of pear, peach, citrus fruits and flowers leading into a zesty palate of bright fruit and mild mineral.

2. 2014 Badia a Coltibuono Chianti “Cetamura” (Tuscany, Italy) – Badia a Coltibuono is one of the grand old estates of Tuscany and this is year in and year out one of the best Chianti values on the planet. Composed almost entirely of Sangiovese and fermented in stainless steel, it is a young and vigorous wine with a great mix of red fruit and spice. Simple, delicious, and custom made for pizza or red sauced pasta dishes, it’s hard to beat for the price.

3. 2010 Mocali Brunello di Montalcino (Tuscany, Italy) – The 2010 vintage was fantastic for Brunello di Montlacino, and Mocali crafted one of the top values (relatively speaking) of the vintage. This is well-structured and lingers on the earth- and mineral-laden finish. Best from 2019 through 2035.” 94 points
